Verdi's A Masked Ball on 9/11 with naked cast in Mickey Mouse masks

Count on those wacky opera directors to deliver outrage- old people wearing only Mickey Mouse masks, Women wearing Hitler mustaches, Dead Elvis, Uncle Sam, the wreckage of the World Trade Center- tons of heavy handed symbolism, but how do they sound?

The link may not be safe- they show those naked old people- so I'll say, it's a avante garde production of "A Masked Ball" and it's selling out in Germany. I doubt the Met will re-stage it.

SH*T like this is makes opera seem even deader: Random "shocking" images applied for no reason other than to shock. Gasp! It's Naked Mickey Mouses! Gasp! It's Naked Female Hitler! Gasp! It's the ruins of 9/11! Gasp! How daaaaaare they!

Maybe there's more of an audience for this sort of thing at European theaters that are state subsidized. Here it just looks silly.

Actually my first thought on seeing the pictures was "Wow, that would make an excellent concept for Grease!"
