Today, the District of Columbia City Council voted to recognize Same Sex marriages performed in other states. I think it will prove interesting to watch how this evolves since all of D.C.'s laws must be approved by Congress.
The initial vote was 12-0. The unanimous vote sets the stage for future debate on legalizing same-sex marriage in the District and a clash with Congress, which approves the city's laws under Home Rule. The council is expected to take a final vote on the legislation next month.

I wish DC took the initiative to legalize Gay marriage instead of 'just' recognizing it from the legal states. Also nine years ago- VERMONT had Civil Union as a 'compromise' to gay marriage. then 9 years later- they change it to Gay Marriage. Its another proof that you can NOT compromise human rights! there's no such thing as 75% or 50%- you have to give them total 100%!
I hope California will learn from Vermont!

Are they allowed to do that? Seriously....I'm not sure how the laws for the District work. They're not a state, so there is no Constitution. This may be as close as Washington DC is allowed to get, just because of their unique nature.

Posted: 4/9/09 at 12:40amD.C.'s laws have to be approved by Congress under their really unfortunate home rule charter. The vote that's in the headlines now was a preliminary vote, not a final one. Maybe Congress will let this law pass, but if D.C. tries to legalize gay marriage there's sure to be a clash.
