you know Rodney, some might say older people shouldn't vote because they're stuck in their ways and not "with the times"
the young always seem "liberal" because they're less ignorant then the generation before them. Usually.
If someone 18-21 decides to vote anti-homophobia, anti-ignorance, anti-lies, anti-ex-cocaineuser... well then SO BE IT!
STAND UP and MAKE A DIFFERENCE. :)

I know they are more likely to vote stupid.
Wow, how childish was that?
I know many many young people who are far more versed in politics than those who are older. You're quite possibly the first person I've ever talked to who would say that young people shouldn't vote. And I knew the 26th amendment without looking it up, and I'm 19 and dammit, I'm voting. And voting for Kerry. And I know exactly why I'm voting for Kerry and why I'm not voting for Bush, and it's not "um...cause I'm a democrat." I have actual reasons, I've attended political events and discussions. I've watched debates, and I have intelligent things to say. In fact, I worked at my state capitol for spring break my senior year of high school. How can you honestly say that 18-21 year olds shouldn't vote? Particularly for this election, when many of the decisions being made will have such an impact on young people.
Wow, that was a lot of anger...sorry, it just made me mad.

Posted: 10/2/04 at 7:22pmUnless you are willing to move the draft age to 21 too, I would NEVER support the repeal of the 26th amendment. While you may think we will vote stupid, how much worse is it that so many people were enlisted and lost their lives for a country in which they didn't even have right to vote yet? You know that is the reason they changed it. It would be a smack in the face of all those who lost their lives before they were able to vote. I find that stance offensive.

Well, my changes would also require a person to be a veteran to vote at all.
So it's all good.

"So it's all good."
But is it? Your generic assumptions, broadly-based opinions, and lax comments are offending people. I doubt I'm the only who doesn't consider that to be "all good."
By the way, well done, Sammy.

Jess- Nice!
I don't really know much about it, but I've heard something about 14-year-olds being able to vote, but their vote doesn't count as a full vote. It counts as 1/4th of one. And a 16-year-old's vote would count as half of a vote. I think that'd be awesome for us REALLY young people to get a word in. But I guess I'm not too thrilled about my opinion only being worth 1/4th of an actual vote.

Posted: 10/2/04 at 8:27pmwait, is that system actually in effect somewhere? i'd heard all these rumors of different states considering a plan like that in order to increase voter turnout, but I wasn't aware it had been actively used. it seems like something like that would be more controversial if it were instituted, especially in an election year like this.

Posted: 10/2/04 at 8:30pmNo, I don't think it's in effect anywhere. But I've heard about it from people, and I think that would be really neat. But controversial, yeah.

only veterans voting ??
That would mean there would have to be massive wars ALL the time for there to be veterans to vote.
And they'd all have to be non-active in the army anymore.
What kind of plan is that?!
thanks emcee.
Good job jess!

No prob guys! Kind of fun...venting and such.
On the same note though, I think young people do need to learn about the issues more. Actually, I think ALL people need to learn more about the issues before they vote. And figure out what the hell is going on in the world. There is so much going on that we can't/don't/have no desire to think about. I was in Amnesty International in high school, and it always amazed me how little people knew about what was going on in the world. And I'm totally guilty of it too. It's so easy to not think about it. I think our generation totally has the ability to become one that cares and engages and discusses and DOES! And on that note:
VOTE!!!!!!!! And make your friends vote. And get an absentee ballot if you're at school and do it FAST!!

Posted: 10/3/04 at 12:33amWhatever, Rodney. If we're old enough to die for our country, we're old enough to decide who sends us out to die. And there are plenty of adults who couldn't dream of having the maturity and intelligence of some 18-year-olds I know.
