I recently discovered this hilarious show on DVD (somehow having missed it during its original run from 1999-2001) and I can't get enough. Mary Cherry should've had her own spin-off.

I'd be curious to hear what other people think about this underrated show.

Season 2 comes out on DVD in March.

LoringsGuy,

Didn't you just love the "Evita" parody in the first season finale?

The second season is even better - the writers threw any semblance of reality out the window when it came to Mary Cherry and gave her the most wacked out storylines you can imagine! The season finale had Cherry Cherry putting Mary Cherry up for adoption after finding Mary Cherry's long lost twin sister, B-Ho (think an even lower-rent JLo). Mary Cherry is last seen in an orphanage wearing a red Little Orphan Annie dress and lipsynching to the Jay-Z version of "Hard Knock Life!" There's one more even bigger suprise in the last couple minutes regarding her paternity, but I won't ruin it for you!

All the actors were great. In fact, Tammy Lynn Michaels married Melissa Ethridge!!!!!!!!. I liked that kooky teacher.

I am so glad a thread like this is posted. Popular is one of my fave shows, and I watched the entire dvd in a week. The Christmas episode is the best, and I LOVE Mary Cherry! (As well as Nicole and April Tuna). This is the wackiest show that I find extremely entertaining. I was actually very upset that it got cancelled, because we need a show like this on tv nowadays.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

How did I miss the Evita parody?? I watched the season 1 finale but don't remember an Evita reference....

I think my favorite episode so far is "Caged!" where all the women are PMSing simultaneously. That seems to be the point at which the show went completely over-the-top and then it never looked back.

The Evita parody is the musical number that they do. It is such a take off on "A New Argentina"

Ohhhh, yeah....of course! I thought it was a spoof of Les Miz, but Evita works, too.

Now, I have a question: Arnetia Walker, who played a teacher on the show....was she in Dreamgirls at some point? I think it's her singing voice Mary Cherry is lip-synching to during that musical number.

Did someone mention Mary Cherry, the best character ever to appear on television in one of the greatest shows of all time?!

Yes, she was in a Dreamgirls revival. She was Lorell in the Lillias White revival.
She was also in the Wiz

This is on the Dreamgirls website:

Arnetia Walker is the only performer to actually perform all three roles (Deena, Lorrell, and Effie) on stage in any of the original or touring productions. Other performers were listed as understudies but Ms. Walker is the only actress to perform them.

...I love the Supremes/"Lovechild" number Arnetia Walker performs in the episode where Brooke thinks she is pregnant ("Dirty Ho, What you havin' that baby fo', Dirty Ho, Gonna be a Prom Mom on the Floor..."). Updated On: 1/6/05 at 11:15 AM

Popular really grew on me. Lesley Bibb reminds me of Felicity.

Nicole and Mary Cherry have must have been the 2 most fun roles ever to play.

I loved how in one episode, Josh hooked up with all the girls.

I liked the Harrison character but the wearing of so much
man-jewelry really distracted me.

It's worth a shot/ :) www.freephotoiPods.com/?r=15009978

I loved this show! I was majorly bummed when it ended. Especially the WAY it ended. I almost threw the tv out the window when I found out it wouldn't be continued.
