Holy CRAP this one is hard! I don't have the brainpower for it right now. You know I'll end up doing it later, though.
Heehee. I just realized that I used 'eh' in my last post. I AM CANADIAN.
Goodnight for real this time. And again, GOOD LUCK Tiff. I'll send the good vibes your way.

Go to bed, Tiff. :P
Anyhoo, I kind of had my point of collapse early this evening. Literally. I collapsed on my bed and couldn't get up because I'd just worked with my poli sci group for 6 straight hours and you know how much sleep I've gotten lately. So...45 minutes later I was up again and vowed not to work for the rest of the day. Which now seems stupid, because I still have a crapload of stuff due Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. *sigh* So much for Chanukah...

Aww, I'll listen to you whine. I can emphathize, plus you guys have been good to me about ignoring me. (Well, sort of.
)
Do you feel refreshed now? What other assignments do you have? I'm contemplating taking a quick nap and then starting to study, but I don't know if I'll regain consciousness.

Posted: 12/3/04 at 11:59pmI no longer feel like I'm going to die, which is always a plus. I just have a slight headache and fatigue now. As for my assignments, I have the final poli sci paper due Monday (that's what I was working on with the group), Shakespeare writeups due Tuesday, and musicianship homework due Wednesday. Then I have my psychology final next Tuesday and my musicianship final next Wednesday. And then it's winter break time. Woot!

Eloquent, Bway_Matt!
Plum, oh man. I don't even wanna think about next week. I'm fighting one losing battle at a time.
Do you guys have any idea how to crack the problem I posted?

Posted: 12/4/04 at 12:04amHuh? Oh, I started the second one and was doing fine, but when the third question started by violating the premises of the problem as a whole I got pissed. Want me to keep going anyway? I love these things.

Posted: 12/4/04 at 12:05amIf you can do it fairly quickly, sure. I don't want you to waste all your time on it! I'm just having trouble figuring out how to do that in 8 minutes!

Posted: 12/4/04 at 12:11amOkay, you start with the easiest conditions- flounder must be number 2 and kingfish must be 5 or 6. Check each answer to make sure it matches up to those conditions and right away you eliminate answer e and and d.

Next, check the other conditions. I found it useful to make a table- the vertical is the choices (a through e) and the horizontal is the number of the course (1-7). The cells each had the first letter of the fish. So row a would be JFLMGKH. It makes things easier to look at.
Answer c is eliminated because G doesn't come 2 before H.
Answer b is eliminated because L comes after G.
So the answer to 1 is a.

oh okay. i see. i was able to get #1. it's the "if" questions that throw me off, and i don't know what diagrams work out best.
oh wait. #1 isn't (a).

Posted: 12/4/04 at 12:20amOkay, question 2- obviously the haddock can't be in the #2 spot. Look at the other conditions- if K comes after J and K is 5 or 6, then J must be 5 or 4 or below. But it's the next conditions that are really vital. G comes 2 before H, so H must be 3 or above. But if L comes before G then H must be 4 or above. And once again, since F must be number 2, then H must be 5 or above. Making the answer (I think) c. Is that right?

It's not? Geez, I'm addled. Let me look again.
ETA: I'm still getting a. Unless grouper coming 2 courses before haddock doesn't mean what I think it means.

Okay, third question (I'm losing my confidence. Aaaah!).
If K is 5, than G can't be at 3 since it's 2 before H. So choice a is out. H can't be at 4 because then G would be at 2, and 2 is occupied by F. So choice b is out. J could be number 3, but it doesn't have to be. 3 could be L. And either J or L could be 1. So that leaves choice e- M is 7- which is true. Even though J and L are interchangable neither can be at 7 because L comes before G and J comes before K.

Posted: 12/4/04 at 12:32amAnd the answer to number 4 is c, which I just thought was the best possibility after doing number 3 and seeing how much the kingfish affects the rest of it. It was just a matter of testing that choice. I could lay out the logic of it, though, if you want.

Okay, on to the harder ones! (I love talking to myself.)
Okay, question 1. We know the gender layout of the statues must be MFMF or FMFM or FMMF. Which means we don't know what the gender of statue 3 is, which means answers a and b are out. We don't know enough about where the gangster is to say it's c. The answer is obviously d since only statues 1 or 4 can glow in the dark.

Question 2: Definitely c.
If statue 4 is a male glowing one, then it must be an athlete as well. We established that the only possible gender configurations are FMFM, MFMF, or FMMF. If statue 4 is male, then it must be the FMFM configuration, so a and b are true. And statue 3 stands between the athletes. So the answer is c. Simple. :)
