WOE TO WICKED W/OUT THE TONY...

[Disclaimer: I don't know if anyone has expressed this opine. If so, please forgive redundancy. Peace. Out.]

Ya knoooooooow, I think WICKED is really gonna be hurt by not winning the BEST MUSICAL Tony. I predict it closing within months after the girls leave -- it's not gonna matter how good Eden Espinoza is, or Laura Bell Bundy is -- and the days when Joel Grey could guarantee ticket sales have disappeared like the original cast album of BALLROOM.

The show just ain't strong enough -- and too expensive. Sure, people are practically j**zing all over themselves re: Idina's win, but girlfriend ain't gonna be donning the green Max Factor for much longer. The only other big wins it had were technical awards -- and people don't go to see the scenery. (Well, perhaps they did for CATS, the first big mega-musical, but them days are o'er.)

It's gonna close soon, and it's gonna close at a financial loss. And then every club act outside NYC is gonna be graced with a sub-par rendition of "For Good".

Nope.

"Wicked" is fine and will run for some time. It's also closer to being in the black than people probably think.

Yep. It's not like it's skating by at 75% or anything. I understand the notion that expensive shows have a higher weekly nut and sometimes don't make money even when they're moderately successful but any show consistently at 100% at full price in one of Broadway's biggest houses is going to make its money back quickly.

I gotta discount back in March! Good seat to the left but EXCELLENT value! I kinda think Wicked and Caroline split the vote leaving the "Q"'s with the only clear margin. I really would love to know the actual numbers but oh well! I still do not like the Q show. "Course I am no fan Of Sesame St either!

I got a BIG discount back in January. I got like, 60 tickets (group thing) rear orchestra for $55! They were awesome seats (well, every seat in the Gershwin is awesome), and it was really cheap!

Sabre: Read what I wrote carefully, you obtuse tiger. I didn't say "closing notices tomorrow," I said closing notices when the girls leave. If Edema isn't leaving until January (which I read on another thread -- who knows if it's true...), than I predict the show closing sometime in the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2005.

And don't get me wrong -- I'm not at home conjuring curses on WICKED. I'm just thinking about sheer economics. It's an expensive show to keep up. Think about SUNSET BOULEVARD. How long did it run? A respectable run -- but still closed at a loss. Go back further in history. SWEENEY TODD. Also closed at a loss -- even after Angela, Len, Dorothy, and George had their stab at it.

We'll see. I could be wrong. It's happened before. But the show closing sometime next year is a very real possibility, methinks.

Wicked isn't going anywhere for a while. It is at 100%, there are very few comps (averaging less than 10 per show) and discount tickets are not easy to get at this point. The show is far from losing money. The loss of Idina and Kristin will effect audience attendance and that's expected and planned for. Don't expect to see aclosing notice on Wicked for quite a while.

WOW! Is all i have to say, this show will be going for a long time. I mean if u think its going to close after Idina leaves you are crazy becuase NOBODY out of the theatre district knows her, so the show will go on!!

wicked will not break the 1,000 performance mark. i'm not saying it's going to close tomorrow or even this year, but it's not got long legs.

Not to mention the fact that Wicked is based on such a classic beloved story, the show is an eye-popping spectacle, and it is a new family show. It will be around for a while.

It probably won't. Once the girls are gone the show will start to wind down and eventually close having made a nice little profit. Don't get upset all you little Wickedites, chances are there will be a national tour

I honestly don't think the majority of ticket buyers are going to see the two leading ladies. Most of them probably have no idea who they are. They are going to see the big hit spectacle of the year that has such pretty photos on the fliers. Who knows how many of the parents bought the novel for their kids thinking it was like the musical and appropriate for children. I would love to see the looks on their faces when their 6 year-old asks, "Mom, what's an orgy?"

I can't figure out what people are going to see. When I first heard this show was in teh making I figured those of us who enjoyed the book would make up most of the audience just to see how it transferred to stage. Then the show die out and close.

Then it became a success and I figured people were seeing ebcasue of the hype and because it was the show to see. However, when you look at the main board here, it's Idina/Kristin focused. Is that just beacsue they happen to be the current stars? Will the wickettes transfer their adorartion over to the new stars and continue going to see the show?

I never what to make of any of this because the idea of a BW show and it's stars becoming cult icons among kids is new to me.
