Anybody else a fan? Roger Ebert wrote a great essay about it:

I am a huge fan of this and Douglas Sirk's other films. On the surface it's sudsy melodrama, but don't be fooled. Look closer and it's oh, so much more than what meets the eye...and what can I say about Dorothy Malone in this: Total whore/bitch-goddess. Rock Hudson at his swooniest. Lauren Bacall cast in a role against type.

I look forward to reading the essay.

I own the Criterion Collection version.

Ebert writes:

To appreciate a film like “Written on the Wind” probably takes more sophistication than to understand one of Ingmar Bergman's masterpieces, because Bergman's themes are visible and underlined, while with Sirk the style conceals the message.

I love Dorothy Malone's "cup o' crazy" performance! It's so deliciously over-the-top. It's brilliant and hilariously campy to me. She won the Oscar for it, too!

I can't decide whether it's the best or worst acting performance.

That character is such a scene-stealer, I can't imagine any actor being demure with it.
