Ms. Sykes will be very useful. She's something many spokespeople for this civil rights issue are not: truly funny. The movement needs her. Gay people need her. America needs her.

I love Wanda , had no idea that she was gay though. I had a duvet day yesterday and watched two of her specials where she was talking about her husband and having sex with guys etc... so it was a shocker to me. Although her imitation of two women together in porn takes on a whole new meaning now.Lol!
Loved her speech though and can't wait to hear more from her.

"It IS possible to be an advocate of the LGBT community while still remaining private about your own personal life."
I suppose it is, if you are a gay woman, and no one in the media ever thinks to ask you the question "Are You Gay?" I wonder how she would have answered the question 5 years ago, when her career was not so well established, or during the time she was married. Not putting her down. I just think she had it easy, compared to some. But good for her, for coming out. I've always liked her.

"I just think she had it easy,"
Since you don't know her situation, how can you claim that a black lesbian had it easy?

If you're going to quote me, why not quote the whole statement?
And yes, IMO she, and lesbians in general, do have a easier time of it, than gay men do.

I could quote the whole paragraph, it doesn't change a thing.
Where do you get your information that blacks and lesbians had it easier?
Easier than who or what?

Yes, it does. By leaving out part of a quote, the statement is taken out of context. And you know that.
I never said a thing about blacks. You did. I said (IN MY OPINION) lesbians have an easier time coming out than gay men.
There are a number of reasons I believe this is true.
Either you agree or you don't. Makes no nevermind to me.

I'm just wondering what you are basing your information on?
Are you just assuming or just guessing?

I'm a lurker but I have to jump in. How do lesbians have it easier? I've never heard of such a thing! Lesbians barely get a voice in the gay community. Gay Pride is all about boys gyrating and partying and a couple lesbos with drums. Look at your average gay rag - usually there's a special two-page lesbo section in the middle of the rent boy ads.
And in the straight world, let's see... They still earn less (like all women), they still have to endure sexual harassment. And I don't think most gay women see themselves reflected in the media. I don't see how they have it easier...

I know they sure love being called lesbos, though.

Why do you ask? If you have a differing view, then state it. Do you agree or disagree? Do you think it's easier, in general, to be a lesbian or a gay man, in the society we live in today?

I asked you first.
Why do you think lesbians have it easier?
Is it because straight folks would rather watch two women going at it than two men?
Just answer the question.

You're right. All those things are true enough. But, IMO lesbians are looked upon more kindly by society then gay men are. As some here have aptly stated before, it's the butt sex that grosses people out, with gay men. Lesbians don't have that stigma to contend with. In Wanda Sykes case, she was able to come out when she was ready to come out. On her own terms, for her own reasons. Nobody in the media harassed her about it. She was never asked the question "Are You Gay"?. She was able to "pass", in public at least, as straight for 34 years. And nobody, on this thread at least, has said that she should have come out a minute sooner.
JMO, feel free to disagree.

I do, because she wasn't lying about herself, ever.
And she's never hidden who she was.

"I do, because she wasn't lying about herself, ever."
Really? Was she ever put in a position where she would have to lie? Such as being asked "Are You Gay?" by a national publication? I don't think so, but I could be mistaken.
"And she's never hidden who she was."
Never? Did her husband know she was a lesbian??? Some of the people on this thread were under the impression she was straight. If she's never hidden who she was, why would anyone think that?

""Did her husband know she was a lesbian???"
Did she when she married him? Some people make mistakes.
Obviously your parents did.

You apparently don't want to discuss Wanda Sykes. You just want to bait me into an arguement. Sorry to disappoint, I ain't bitin'. You don't see the double standard, cause you don't want to see it. Fine.

I was simply making a point, about there being a double standard. You don't see it, cause you don't want to see it. Fine. I've stated my opinion. I'm done. You can name call, (which is very childish IMO), and try and bait me into an arguement all you want. I ain't bitin'.

Some people make mistakes.
----------------
Not just some but everyone makes mistakes.
Lesbians may not have it easier, but they are more widely accepted by the heterosexual population than gay men. I have no data or proof other than my own personal experiences and observations.
