A few weeks ago I asked our musical director to keep an open mind for casting next year. She supposedly pre-cast next years musical with all the same leads that are in this year’s musical. I'm not a role-snob. BUT, chorus in 'The Wizard of Oz' doesn’t seem to appealing to me.
. Although she didn't tell me this reportedly, it made her so angry that she changed the musical we're doing next year just because. (I MADE IT VERY CLEAR I DIDN'T BELIVE THIS RUMOR) Was I wrong?

Posted: 5/19/06 at 11:12amHas she picked the new musical? I've been in that situation before. I think you did the right thing. It's not right to pre-cast, especially for high school because you never know if a new person comes to school and is wonderful, or someone else that’s been in previous shows will surprise you. I probably would have done the same thing.

I have to say that although I disagreed with pre-casting in high school shows while I was in high school shows, I think that it's necessary to a certain point. If you're going to do "Fiddler on the Roof," you need to know that you'll have a Tevye, y'know? It all depends on the size of the talent pool you're picking from.
It can't be helped sometimes, too, especially if the director has been around the school for a while and he/she knows the kids rather well and all.
Also, to a large degree, pre-casting happens in the real world.

I hate pre-casting, it's so obvious that it is done at our school and it drives me crazy. I mean, I understand that sometimes it's hard not to...I mean, as posted before, you need to make sure when you pick a show that you have people that can fill the parts and all...but still, it's like, "give all people a fair chance"...
Our senior class this year is chock-full of talent, so they are pretty obviously the favorites in our music/drama department...so it will be interesting to see what happens in this area next year...hmmm...

Posted: 5/20/06 at 10:59pmI realize that NOW that there had to be SOME pre casting. But, she had cast every SINGLE role; five of them principals roles from this year. That's what bothers me, the playing of favorites/hierarchy in School Theater is the problem I'm having with this. I think the school musical every year should have a different feel along with some new faces.

At my school. We all already know who gets what pretty much before audtions, this one kid always gets the male lead, and he's pretty good at musical comedy but he's not the best singer, and this girl whose amazing always gets female lead, audtions are pretty much for ensemble/supporting roles. I always get the fat stupid guy.
Example: Purser in ANYTHING GOES and Smokey in DAMN YANKEES.
I wish I had you're courage to say what I think, I fear I'll get nothing if I do, my mom wants to write a letter to our director and get this practice of same year same kinda part casting resolved but I stop her. I dont wanna get singled out.
I wanna get my chance to shine, but not at the expense of others.
