Washington Heights...yay or nay

My lease is up at the end of the month and I've been looking around at affordable neighborhoods around NYC. I've noticed that Washington Heights in Manhattan is relatively inexpensive, but I've never been there nor do I know anybody who lives there.
Anyone live near or around Washington Heights and care to give their opinion? Honest opinions only please. Thanks!

I've lived in Washington Heights for about a year. While there are some more experienced denizens on these boards, I'll give my two cents.
Really, my experience here has been positive overall. My rent is great, and my place is of a decent size. I'm just a block away from the A train (and the 1, but that's not quite as exciting) so I can get to midtown in 15-20 minutes. And I've always felt safe.
Drawbacks: Not a lot of shopping or such where I live. You can get the bare basics of groceries, but not much more. And there might be some good restaurants in the area, but I haven't found them yet. Spanish is spoken a lot more than English, and in some businesses, you might have trouble communicating in English. One other thing -- there are a lot of LOUD street parties, especially in the summer.
This is not where I want to settle, but I think it's a great option for short term. In fact, I might even have a roommate option open starting Feb. 1, if you're interested.

Thanks for the info Calvin. I live in a primarily spanish speaking area of Queens, so the language barrier isn't anything new to me. In fact I had an entire conversation with my Super today on the telephone with him speaking Spanish the whole time and me speaking English...needless to say the drain in my kitchen is still clogged.
Anywho I'm still hoping to find a nice place in Astoria, but keeping my options open at the same time. We shall see...

Another WHer here...I've lived in three areas of the Heights. It's mostly fine. Sucks more when I have to take care of my dog and forego social engagements but that's just what it is.
I'd be happy to explain more about the various smaller neighborhoods of the heights.
