Is anyone here a fan of Night Vale? Between its crossover with the off-off-Broadway community and its heavy LGBT themes, I always expect it to have more of a following in the theatre world than it does, but I had never heard it mentioned here before.

There was a thread about it a couple years ago, but that's the only mention I recall.
I really enjoy it, though think it's gotten into a slump in the last year, mostly trodding the same well-worn paths it has since its inception. The highpoint was really the StrexCorp arc in its second year.
I think from a diversity standpoint, it is consistently a great achievement- in both casting and storytelling.

I'm a fan as well, but I admit I haven't listened for about a year- I agree with Kad that the show hit a rut after the StrexCorp arc was finished. Still, recently I re-listened from the beginning and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. I also went to one of the recent New York live shows and had a great time, especially as it was right after the blizzard and the audience was definitely just excited that the show was still happening. The writing is always interesting, and Cecil Baldwin is always fun to listen to.

It's the closest American media, mainstream or otherwise, has come to hitting the distinct tone of British dark comedy. Night Vale is a pretty clear answer to "Hitchhiker's Guide," "Mighty Boosh," "League of Gentlemen" and "The Scarifyers" more than it is to any American analogue.

I used to love it, but lost interest a bit over a year back? (Seems to be common). I dunno, I've heard some say they're a victim of their own success, but regardless I think they could use a good hiatus and regroup.

This is completely under my radar (and possibly others too). What is it? Where to find it? Is it superhero sci-fi? TV or podcasts or other? Pay services? Any info is gladly appreciated!

It's a podcast, Steve. Kind of surreal, dark humor sci-fi. I might compare it to someone like Douglas Adams.
I'm a fan of it, but like a lot of others on the thread, I've fallen off over the past year.

The basic pitch: Night Vale is a friendly, diverse and multicultural town in the American Southwest- an alternate universe America where all conspiracy theories, however far fetched, are true. Cecil Palmer, the local radio news anchor, narrates the town's goings on, but his idyllic depiction of vaguely apocalyptic life gradually becomes derailed by the machinations of an encroaching tech conglomerate slash cult.

Now I know where Chris Carter got the ideas for the X Files this year. The episodes sound like this podcast, complete with Joel McHale playing the Cecil Palmer character. The ending was abysmal and was probably a pilot for Lauren Ambrose (Einstein!) and the new male FBI agent.
I think it got good ratings but I also think Duchcvny and Anderson got paid a boatload of money.

I haven't watched the new X-Files, having never finished the old one, but maybe I'll check it out. In any case, Joel McHale is a better actor, but a less mellifluous voice, than Cecil Baldwin (who plays Cecil Gershwin Palmer on Night Vale; nearly all the characters share the first name of the actor who plays them).
