I have passion for good books and am always looking for recommendatons. Anyone reading somethig now or recently read anything worthwhile?
I just started "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz a wondrful writer who has, up until now, never done a full length novel. He has written autobiogrphical short stories for years. Many of these are included in an anthology entitled "Drown"
Next on my list is "Alice" by Stacy Cordery. It's a biography of Alice Roosevelt Longworth, one of the daughters of Theodore Roosevelt. She was somewhat unconventionl, politically savvy and fiercy outspoken for most of her 97 years. Seems like it should be a fascinating read.

Posted: 11/10/07 at 2:55pmI'm reading two books but the one that I think would interest you is one I found on the dollar rack at the Strand! I'm loving it - it's fascinating. Jed Harris: The Curse of Genius, by Martin Gottfried.

"I was reading the "What Are You Currently Reading?" thread."
I just finished reading that. Loved it, but was a little disappointed with the ending. It didn't tie up enough of the loose ends.

I've read a couple of his books. Haven't heard of this one.

In late December, I am going on a cruise. I am looking for a good book to read. The only problem is, because I have trouble with comprehension, only certain books hold my attention.
Some books I really enjoyed are:
A Million Little Pieces (I read it before the whole hoopla with it being fiction)
My Sister's Keeper (Jodi Picoult)
Without You (Anthony Rapp)
A Child Called "It" (Dave Pelzer)
The Lost Boy (Dave Pelzer)
Eh, seems I like somewhat depressing books, huh?
And I really prefer non-fiction.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Posted: 11/10/07 at 10:56pmRaviolisun - I've read Sophie's World. Loved the structure of it, even though you can feel the "translationese" of the book at times (it was originally written in, like, Swedish or something weird... can't remember). Don't want to ruin anything, so I'll just say that it's really well constructed.

Ravi, be interpretive with Sophie's World. Good book still though.
I've just finished 'Boy Meets Boy' by David Levithan and I'm currently about 200 pages into 'The Book Thief' by Markus something or other.
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

Posted: 11/11/07 at 8:51amI'm marking time with Dickens' OUR MUTUAL FRIEND, largely because I've read it twice before and am familiar with it. I'm having a hard time reading new (to me) books right now, for some reason. I'm sure it will pass.
