Bush Rushes Back To DC! Ends Vacation!
by Michael in New York - 3/21/2005 01:46:00 AM
Yes, as you already know, Bush ended his vacation early -- a virtually unprecendented act for a President who spends a LOT of time on vacation -- and rushed back to DC so he could score political points on the painful private decision surrounding Terri Schiavo. Obviously, this took hours and hours of time when the papers he went to sign could have been flown to him in Texas without much difference. But this issue was too important and he wanted to spend hours flying there to emphasize to the far right how he had come through for them.
Now let's think about the many other times when Bush couldn't be bothered to spend an hour or two on an issue and decide if any of them were more important.
1. The tsunami victims -- More than 100,000 people died in the worst natural disaster of our lifetime. Millions were left homeless. It happened just after Christmas and hit hard our staunch ally, Thailand. (Many, many Muslims were devastated by this disaster.) Bush couldn't be bothered to step outside for FIVE minutes and offer his heartfelt sympathy to an event that had the rest of the world riveted and shocked. It took Bush DAYS to do anything, even after his aides had bungled our first offer of aid.
2. Investigating 9/11 with Congress -- Bush spent months hemming and hawing and avoiding having to meet with the bipartisan panel trying to look into the worst attack on US soil in history. He finally, grudgingly, spent a few hours but insisted he appear with Cheney by his side, cause they were busy and needed to get this over with.
3. Heck, 9/11 itself -- On the day of the worst attack on US soil in our history, Bush spent hours and hours flying around the country when he could have just spent a few minutes to get in front of a camera and reassure the nation that he was in charge and we'd get through this.
4. Military funerals -- Bush is the first President in US history during wartime (and presumably peacetime as well) who has refused to attend a SINGLE military funeral to honor one of our fallen soldiers. It's not just the couple of hours he can't be bothered to spend; Bush thinks it would be bad politics to remind people that young men and women die in war, so why bother honoring them? They can take a hit on the battlefield, but Bush won't risk taking a hit in the polls. And if things are going so swimmingly in Iraq, why does he STILL refuse to honor our military?
Bush Rushes Back To DC! Ends Vacation!
none of this surprises me.
I wonder just what other far right issues he will take to greater importance than, oh, WORLD EVENTS.
And, you know he is going to keep kissing the conservative right's butt until Election Day 2006. After that--it's all brewskis in Crawford! Yee Haw!!
Well, of course he didn't run back to DC for those other events--they won't garner him votes.

Thanks PJ. I hope that this abhorrent abuse of power backfires!
I appreciated your comment in the other thread about what you would have done to DeLay during your experience with your mother.
LOL brdlwyr--I forgot exactly what it was, but I'm sure it was graphic!

This was PJ's quote:
If Jeb Bush or Tom Delay had tried to force me to keep my mother on one of those machines, I would have taken a knife and pushed into into his eyeball before he turned my mother into a machine like that.

I just think it's amazing that the R's will spend SO much time and effort on saving Terri Schiavo's "life" when they refuse to support any sort of healthcare for real actual living Americans.
"I just think it's amazing that the R's will spend SO much time and effort on saving Terri Schiavo's "life" when they refuse to support any sort of healthcare for real actual living Americans."
And apparently aren't all that concerned with the number of premature deaths their little "oil harvest" in Iraq has generated either.
Here's Tom DeLay pandering to the Right-to-Lifers yesterday:
"She talks and she laughs and she expresses likes and discomforts," DeLay said Sunday evening. "It won't take a miracle to help Terri Schiavo. It will only take the medical care and therapy that patients require."
I was ranting about this is morning once I heard the late night session and early return -- CAN IT PLEASE BE 2008 -- NOW!
i wish it is 2008 right now. it's really sad to hear about what our President will do and will not do. sad times.
Why wait until 2008? Things need to start changing in 2006!

I'd say, "Let it be 2008 already." But you know the Dems will fawk that up, too.

He wants more votes for what, rose?
ElTico68's got it. If the Dems can win some seats in the House or Senate in '06, that will make a world of difference in the Repubs/Bush trying to get their usually ridiculous agenda through. You know what I'm scared about in '08 - that there will be a candidate out there that is even more right than Bush - who will get elected. There are already members of congress that are more conservative than Bush who, I'm sure you don't need reminding, were ELECTED by their constituents. I mean, Jim DeMint, Senator from SC, was elected by a fair margin on a platform where he said gays shouldn't be allowed to teach. Then he went on to say unwed pregnant women shouldn't be allowed to teach. And this guy WON. Having your guy in the presidency is nice, but if you don't have the House or Senate, your agenda ain't goin' no where.
It's amazing what Bush will do to kiss the backsides of the Christian Taliban while he basically ignores the more pressing issues. The Democrats had better get their act together for the next election.
What really gauls me is the way these white men in suits and flag pins on their lapels are playing doctor without a scintilla of medical evidence. It's deeply offensive, having lay people (and Tom DE Lay) people not Play God, but Play Doctor. Not a one of them is a neurologist, or even speaks with any authority. Forget Frist -- shame on him, he should know better. But the rest of 'em, appearing on camera and saying things like "we're gonna get Terri some dinner tonight..." as if they'll order her some KFC instead of intrusively sticking a tube in her that she won't feel, and won't benefit from. "Getting Terri some dinner..." is perhaps up there the most odious bit of pandering ever used, once again (as in the run-up to war in Iraq) counting on a level of ignorance from the target audience.

1) Frist looked at a 3 year old videotape of Terri Schiavo and issued a diagnosis. He really should have his medical license revoked for that.
2) Bush supported and signed a bill in Texas that allowed hospitals to deny treatment for patients who doctors felt were not likely to recover IF they were unable to pay for expensive treatment. A baby was allowed to die last week in texas OVER HIS MOTHER'S OBJECTIONS under this law.
3) This sick charade is going on because Tom DeLay thinks the Republicans can profit politically by it, according to his own memo.
When I think I can't despise republican's any more, they do crap like this.
I bemoan the death of our "liberal" media.
Where are the REAL watchdogs running Schiavo reports followed by this "Culture of life" tragedy of letting a child die?
"Get her some dinner" indeed...
I'm sure Karl Rove orchestrated GWB's return. Do you think he could have come up with something like that himself? By the way, where are they hiding Dick Cheney? Noticed he hasn't been around.

He is traveling around stumping for Social Security.
Thanks, Gotham. They really haven't shown him at all as of late, especially with the media coverage of Terri Schiavo.

The media stinks. They get on one subject and forget about the rest of the country/world. They haven't really been discussing the kid in Minnesota that killed 10 people Monday afternoon.
