FOnatic,

Hostel and Saw 3 were not trash IMO.I can see how you would dislike those films and in no way are they "good" movies, but for genre films (and the sickos who love them!) they are wonderful.
There is much more than gore to those films. If one is inclined to look for it, they have very interesting points to make about the human condition and the propensity for extreme torture. They mean to shake you up and disturb you, and they do.

And whoever mentioned Dario Argento - he is a genius.

Those aren't films. They're utter trash.

Your opinion. I think that Hostel is a wondeful horror movie. I also thought that Saw III was the "best" of the trilogy.

Anyways, the former is HARDLY the goriest film ever made.

Human beings getting chopped up/drilled into/chainsawed and mutilated is NOT art. It is degradation.

I'm sorry. But it is purely disgusting. Anyone who gets enjoyment from watching such things needs sincere help.

FOnatic,
you miss the point entirely. There are many who would say that plays where people burst into song is completely asinine and have no redeeming merit. That's why it's called an OPINION.
You are entitled to yours, but do not denegrade the genre just b/c it offends you.

There's a difference between finding something humurous...and finding something horrific.

There is no defending the enjoyment of watching human beings be tortured and killed and having their bodies desecrated. Talk until your blue in the face...it is an indefensible and inhuman act.

I enjoy a good thriller. But I find the movies that can be truly scary without gore to be an actual achievement. Movies with extreme gore are just made by lazy (and psychotic) people who need such things in order to inspire some kind of feeling in their audience since they know their films have no substance, they must rely on terribly graphic images.

Oh yes. Truly, that is art.

There is no point in arguing, your mind is closed. I have to ask though, if you feel so strongly, why are posting on a thread that is specificaly discussing gory movies?

I think the beautiful nature of human gore and the grotesque is something David Lynch understands more than anything.

Human organs and human blood is absolutely gorgeous if you're looking at it in the right mindset.

it alsos has to do with the visceral aspect of primal fear. experiencing that horror while safely in a theatre is like a roller coaster. You're scard as ****, but you know you're ultimately not going to get hurt.

Exactly, tazber.

On top of that, there is a lot to learn about life in those moments when we ARE scared and disturbed. And a lot to learn about evil as well...

There have been so many excellent essays on the subject. They also serve as a relief to all the crap that goes on in real life. Sometimes ultra-gore can be very cathartic.
the tension and relief of a well staged scene sets the enbdorphines on fire. There is an actual physical stimulation from it.

Oh, yea. When I'm stressed about work and all my problems...nothing is more relieving than watching a human get torn limb from limb and having their insides taken out.

Plus, when you really think about it, aren't we ALL serial killers underneath it all?

Anyone who gets enjoyment from watching such things needs sincere help.

Sure thing. Anyone who becomes so disturbed over red corn syrup and latex prosthetics and make believe needs sincere help too. I guess we all need counseling.

There is a difference between having a nasty cynical enjoyment of an over the top horror movie and fetishizing the aesthetic beauty of human viscera like some people I won't name but are irritatingly going out of their way to weird people out with every new post.

Fonatic,

First of all, I respect your right to disagree. I was wrong to question your posting on this thread.

Now, let me see if i can articulate this:
It's not the tearing limb from limb that's the appeal. It's the dread you feel when you know it's coming. To refer back to my rollercoaster metaphor, it would be equivalent to going s-l-o-w-l-y up that very high incline waiting for the drop. After the plunge, there is a sense of exhilaration. These days, it takes a lot to engender those fellings as we are so desnsitized. Thus the bar is raised and the effects become gorier.
Obviously it's not something everyone enjoys, but for those of us who do, what a ride it is! Plus the literal sense of life and death stakes makes these scenes very dramatic.

There is a much deeper psychological component to it all also, but I'd have to refer you to any of the books on the subject to explore that aspect.

Since, I haven't seen many of the horror films that have come out in the past 5 years. If I remember Evil Dead was pretty gory, however, they are zombies being hacked up, not someone who is of sound mind and body. I enjoy a good gore slasher flick if it is scary. Hostel even with all that gore was not scary. I went with a bunch of friends and instead of screaming with fright, we laughed because of how dumb it was. Same with Saw. If you look at Dead Alive, the gore is SOOOO over the top and played for laughs and it works well. You could say some of the goriest films are many war films that come out, like Saving Private Ryan.

No doubt bschnied, some of the verisimilitude in the new wave of war films is shocking.

Easily as gory as Hostel but a different type of "entertainment" altogether.

Yeah, this is pretty messed up.

CS, you're desensitized. You've lost touch.

Spend a few hours in a real emergency room watching what comes in and then tell me if you think "Hollywood gore" is beautiful.

Try to bring your head back out of the clouds.

Even if you know it's fake... a fantasy... an exaggeration... you've completely forgotten what it's attempting to "romanticize."

Do yourself a favor... do ME a favor... and try to remember.

PE, dont make this lovely thread into a b12b lovefest!!

b12b, stop making sense!!!
:)

Actually, I love the horror genre, from the shlock to the masters. I would say I've been pretty desensitized to blood and gore, and yes, fright is the fun, not the guts.
HOWEVER, Sunday afternoon, I was taking a cab up 3rd Ave, and somewhere in the upper 60s there was a glut of traffic. Our cab finally, and skillfully weaved his way around the mess. The police were only letting through 1 lane of traffic, so I got a ringside street of the most disturbing thing I've seen in a VERY long while, and it is still haunting me. It seemed to be an accident, but I'm not completely sure. There were only cops left, the ambulance had already gone...blood was all over the street amid shattered glass. What I imagine must have happened is what haunts me most.
