Posted: 1/14/07 at 1:56amI think the lack a true competition in the category, coupled with her buzz, will be what pushes Hudson up to the mic on Oscar night. Honestly, I adored Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal, but I highly doubt they'll be willing to give her #2 so soon. And the two Babel ladies' nominations will be their rewards for fine, supporting performances. And that fifth slot, which is still very much up in the air, is anyone's guess.

No, you are not.

Posted: 1/14/07 at 9:36amThe whole medium of popular cinema is so far behind in the times that I would just stop the Oscars and end awarding studios that churn out the same repetitive garbage year after year.

The best way to end that would be to stop going to those movies.
Be more selective.
Hollywood will always hand out awards to congratulate itself.
But take money out of their wallets, and they'll listen to whatever you have to say.

Hudson was good. But you can't tell me that her performance reached a depth or a level such as...say, Blanchett, Barrazza, or the other ladies. If Barrazza or Rinko were actually known in the states, they would win.
But I had a dream last night that LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE won best picture. I think it's a sign.

"But I had a dream last night that LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE won best picture. I think it's a sign."
A sign of what -- clear, cloudless skies?
If Hudson (DREAMGIRLS) gets nominated along with Rinko Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza (BABEL), Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), and Cate Blanchett (NOTES ON A SCANDAL), according to EW's prediction, I can easily see her winning the statuette. Blanchett's already received one not too long ago. Breslin is a child, which may work against her. [I know other 10-/11-year-olds have won (Tatum O'Neal, Anna Paquin), but that's rarely the case.] Lastly, as munk pointed out, Kikuchi and Barraza are not well-known in America and that's key in a popularity contest. Also, Hudson has the hype/adulation that accompanied Reese Witherspoon all the way to the podium last year. I mean, people can't stop talking about her.

Oh, I don't know what to make of BABEL (I liked it, I but I saw it so long ago that I don't remember it) but Rinko's performance remains firmly etched in my mind. So brilliant.
In fact, many of this years films are forgetable. Like, next day forgetable. I don't remember a thing about THE DEPARTED, BABEL, or any of the details of THE QUEEN. The only 3 films that made an immediate and permanent mark on me were (and are) UNITED 93, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, and DREAMGIRLS. I remember everything about every one of them.

with all the fabulous pictures with supporting actresses, this year, it's a shame Frances de la Tour is going to be mostly forgotten...
#42re: What Movies Would YOU Personally Give The Oscar To?
Posted: 1/14/07 at 2:02pmWell, she has an (undeserved) Tony to fall back on, so I doubt she'll lose much sleep.

Exactly, SM2. Now if some of these other films had better campaigns, it might be a different situation.
Jennifer Hudson is not a wonderful actress. She's a brilliant singer who happens to be naturally suited for performing and has an uncanny connection with song. Nominations and awards and more roles? Yes, bring them on.
Oscar? No. I think she needs to prove herself first.
But again, that's not to say that I wouldn't vote for Hudson this year. There's no one else to vote for.
Then again...Blanchett is already due 2 Oscars (Elizabeth, The Aviator.) She lost Elizabeth to some fishstick. My money might be on Blanchett.

#45re: What Movies Would YOU Personally Give The Oscar To?
Posted: 1/14/07 at 2:08pmI'm not so sure about Blanchett. I think the next one they give her will be in the Lead Actress category, but not this year. I just don't see it happening.

I don't want to threadjack, but Zoe Wanamaker and Tyne Daly (as well as the unnominated Lauren Ambrose, Cherry Jones and Elizabeth Marvel) were leaps and bounds better than de la Tour.

There isn't enough support for NOTES as a movie to win Blanchett a second Oscar for it.
I think buzz is going to build for LMS and I think after it wins the SAG Ensemble Award, people are going to think its a frontrunner to win the BP Oscar - but I have faith, at the end of the day, AMPAS members are going to realize that a BP win for LMS would be one of the most embarressing Oscar wins of all time - second or third only to THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH and TOM JONES and will award it to THE DEPARTED or BABEL.
Buzz on DREAMGIRLS is on the downside - its the "not cool" kid on the playground at the moment but there will probably be a backlash to the backlash by February so who knows. Anything could happen this year.

O'Hara is the only one that could have beaten Hudson this year - but her movie turned out to be a flop.
If Blanchett didn't already have an Oscar, she'd be golden.
The supporting actress category this year is atrocious. They all give wonderful performances, but usually performances like the 2 BABEL girls' are always left out.
Whatever. Hudson will win because it's commercial. And I wonder if she'll ever be up for another major acting award again. She's reaching to top of her game so early...I hope the same thing that happened to Holliday doesn't happen to her.
And I think you can forget a best picture win for BABEL. It's the film of the lot with the worst reviews and the lowest (by far) box office grosses. It's a good film, but it loves itself a little too much to be taken seriously. Campaign lines like "No film moved you more" would, as a voter, be enough to make me forget about voting for the film altogether.
I have a fine solution to this whole debacle. A solution that will actually look Oscar worthy in the history books.
Nominate UNITED 93. Vote for it. It wins.
