What Were They Thinking?

Last night on Netflix streaming, I watched The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom with Shirley MacLaine. Did she do this movie because she was under contract and had to commit? She had already turned in some excellent screen performances and this was one year before Sweet Charity. Also in the movie is Richard Attenborough as her husband.

The movie is a late 1960s mess where some scenes seem to be a pre-cursor of Clockwork Orange mixed in with fantasy scenes that really don't seem to add to the film. It seems like everyone involved in the film (including Shirley and Richard)were on psychedelic drugs.

Do you have any movies where you think: What were they thinking?

From that period, plenty.

Track down a deliciously weird little piece called BIG CUBE. It's so very jaw-dropping...

LOL

I just watched The Big Cube last week. What a bizarre train wreck that was. I'll watch just about anything with a young George Chakiris in it, but I won't be returning to that one.

I try to teach my kids valuable life lessons. Among the most important is to be VERY wary of unknown movies starring big names actors. Alas, like most life lessons, the words of a parent often go unheeded, and they only learn through their mistakes. In other words, they ignored my advice and rented the movie Mixed Nuts, because of its cast that included Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Robert Klein, Anthony LaPaglia, Adam Sandler, Parker Poset, and Jon Stewart. It was as effective as them burning their hands on the stove; they will never again rent an unknown movie based on its stars. I didn't think it was possible for Madeline Kahn to not be funny, but I was wrong.

^^^ madbrian, that's really why I watched my movie. Shirley MacLaine and Richard Attenborough, but especially in smaller roles were Frank Thornton, Patricia Routledge, John Cleese and Barry Humphries.

Two others that has been discussed around here recently:

-- THE APPLE, which is one of those "you have to see it to believe it" films and will probably never again be seen in its entirety (one scene seems to be lost forever), and

-- SKIDOO, which features dancing trash cans and Carol Channing as a revolutionary war soldier.
