Hello all! I want to personally invite you all to join us tonight on "Broadway and More" the Internet Radio Talk Show devoted to All Things Broadway, where tonight’s theme is:

What are the BEST Shows of ALL Time and What are the WORST Shows of All Time. Tell us what YOUR choices are and also what you think the MAJORITY of people will choose as the Best and Worst. Who are the best characters? Who are the worst?

I'm definitely guilty of liking the characters that were constructed to be among the most liked characters in the show (e.g. Eponine from Les Miserables). However, I actually often find myself liking the characters that don't have as much sympathy automatically generated for them via the songs or story even more so than the characters who do.

For example, in Chess, I think the audience is meant to sympathize with Anatoly and Florence more so than Freddie and Svetlana, but I actually like the latter characters more. I think the actual character attributes of Anatoly and Florence fall flat compared to the amount of sympathy the creators intended the audience to have for them. Svetlana and Freddie are, while not necessarily "good," intriguing and aren't put on a pedestal that their characters don't deserve.

On a similar note, I like Javert more than Valjean. Why? While obviously a good protagonist, Valjean is just so black and white and for as much as I like Les Miserables -- and as much as Valjean almost needs to be a purely good character for the sake of the story -- he's, well, boring. Javert is an awesome villian because he is so obviously messed up, but he believes he's acting in good faith and I actually enjoy his character a lot more.

While I certainly like the protagonist or the character that easily gets the sympathy vote, it's pretty cool when some of the other characters kind of find their way into your heart as well. Many of the "best" characters come in shades of gray.
