What are you "JUST..."?

Don't hate me
'Cause I'm just that good
A little misunderstood
You made me, and I'm just that good

Okay, taking the bait because I'm punchy from tech rehearsals. The Off-Broadway show is a musical, a revival. The play is a totally different thing - so far it's been a table read because it's a brand new play. As soon as a theater is procured, there will be an industry reading.
My original point was, Sueleen, as much fun as you had mocking me for performing in a church basement, it's a tad hypocritical to start a thread like this. That's all I was saying.
Carry on.

Posted: 12/1/07 at 6:35pmI've performed amazingly in church basements. It's been years, but I always had a standing o.
#57re: What are you 'JUST...'?
Posted: 12/1/07 at 6:38pmI bet that's not what was standing.

I don't think it is "hypocritical". I am saying BE PROUD of what you are doing. Don't try to "dress it up" to impress.
If you are performing in a church basement, turning pages for the keyboard player and backing up a broadway performer in a number or two DON'T make it sound as if you are starring in an off broadway show. It makes you look not only pathetic, but just a touch delusional. That is all I am saying.
Everybody has to start somewhere, so why try to fool people into thinking it is more than it is? No one would care, if you only told the truth.
So what is the name of the Off-Broadway show you are doing?

Sueleen, I never said February Frolics was an off-Broadway show, and in fact, I told people NOT to come because I didn't have much to do. Why the hell would I say I was in an off-Broadway show if I wasn't? As if that's not the easiest thing in the world to prove or disprove?
So many people have told me you are or must be a frustrated performer who can't stand seeing other people on this board follow their dream and do whatever it takes to get there. I used to brush that off, but I am starting to believe it's true. What other explanation is there for your bitter rantings?
And since you seem to be wondering why I don't trumpet the productions I'm involved in by name around here, just take a step back and look at how I get treated when I do. I'm understandably gun-shy. No matter how great it is or isn't, you'll find a way to make something horrible out of it.

"do whatever it takes to get there."
I love showbiz stories that include that line!

At my age, I don't get asked to do much "whatever" to get there.

There is so much I want to say to you, Rath, and I did start a rather lengthy post that just came off mean.
So follow your dream. No matter how long it takes, YOU WILL BE A STAR. Just don't be ashamed of what you have to do to attain your dream, no matter how old you get.
Oh, and I am not JUST a former performer. You would actually be surprised. But, once again, I am not one to put my whole life on a message board.
Best of luck in all your endeavors.

I have no need to be a star. I'd be happy if I never got any further than the level I'm at now - it's already more than I expected, starting as late in life as I did. I'm not ashamed of any of it, and I certainly haven't lied about any of it - I'm proud of everything I've done, no matter how small.
I don't really care who you are - what I know of you is postings full of negative energy directed at almost everyone on this site. And that lack of caring takes away any potential for surprise.

But it's so much easier to sit back anonymously and take a huge crap on anyone who is putting themselves out there and trying.
I find myself not really giving a damn who someone is or was when they only seem to exude bitchiness and negativity.
And given my experiences in this business, it's almost always the talented and successful (by their definitions) people who are nice and fun and full of positive energy.
The catty queens reside in the seats and message boards.
The successful catty queens are at least funny/witty.

I disagree that all of my postings are negative. I call people on their bull or point out what I consider to be inappropriate behavior. But I have been VERY supportive to MANY on this site.
Just not to the people who I think are delusional or living a lie.
And if not going any further than the level you are at right now is fine with you, who am I to criticize?
So when you say things like:
*takes a deep breath, stays completely calm on the outside*
The musical I'm in? It's OFF BROADWAY. oh yes. Rathy is in an OFF BROADWAY PRODUCTION.
*squeals like a little girl*
Or:
Rath can't just be partying all the time. She has commitments. OFF BROADWAY COMMITMENTS.
Or you call the EQUITY Deputy an idiot because you got called at 7:00 and were not used until 7:30?
Yea, delusional. And uninformed.

Actually, called at 5:30 and not used till 6:15, when I was rushing to get there on time from work. And, as I said, then another hour wasted for 70 of us in that rehearsal working with small groups who had their own time scheduled separately. I didn't call the deputy an "idiot." I said he was useless. It doesn't matter as he actually has left the production and we have a new deputy. Not that that matters much at this point either, we open this week.
Why would it bother you that I'm excited to have my first off-Broadway credit?
And the problem is, Sue, who are you to say what's bull or inappropriate behavior? Why are you so egotistical that you think that's your place, or that we care what you have to say about what others say and do when we know absolutely nothing about you? You could be posting from a loony bin for all we know. OR CARE.
ETA: Hear hear, Jerby.

Uh....the Equity Deputy doesn't schedule rehearsal times. That's worked out with the Director and the PSM. As far as rehearsals go, the deputy's only duty would be to keep track of rehearsals hours and if anyone goes into overtime to make sure that management is notified.
#71re: What are you 'JUST...'?

It's not about scheduling. It's about time usage, and as they are getting away with calling this an Equity Showcase (in an off-Broadway house, we are eligible for all off-Broadway awards, etc., just so I'm not accused of lying about that too) so we're only getting stipends, they're supposed to be keeping everything tighter full company-wise. I'm not making this stuff up, I'm being told it constantly by Equity members.
#72re: What are you 'JUST...'?
Posted: 12/1/07 at 8:45pmWhich actually is about scheduling. If the director doesn't know how or can't work to a schedule, things start to over-lap. It happens all the time, no matter if it's showcase or not. But in any case, if you're not going over the alloted rehearsal hours, then the deputy really can't do anything. The stage manager is the one who really needs to push the director into keeping closer to the schedule, and that doesn't always work either.

Amen.
#74re: What are you 'JUST...'?
Posted: 12/1/07 at 8:46pmI agree with you, but I'm constantly being told that the deputy is supposed to stay on the stage manager about that. Anyway, moot point now.
