On the eve before i stuff my face, what kind of food do you guys eat besides turkey and the traditional stuff.
My family normally has A LOT of seafood for thanksgiving like salmon, crab, and lobster. Prettymuch everything else has a chinese spin to it. Our stuffing for the turkey is a chinese sticky rice with chinese sausage, mushrooms, and other good stuff. And believe it or not, there is sometimes chicken feet. yumm
So whats normally on your table for thanksgiving?
You want a Chinese spin? Try western-style stuffing, with sticky rice and chopped Chinese mushrooms in it. Beloved by most of my family. *gag*
Then we load up on the Chinese noodles, chicekn, seafood, roast pork (siew yok) and all that good stuff. But really, I love turkey and the fixings. White folks got it gooood.
wow that makes my thanksgiving look bland! Can I come to yours?
We just have the norm...turkey, stuffing (normal bread stuffing), mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, some onion white mushy stuff that look like eyes floating in white mucus (yes its gross but my grandma loves it), and apple and pumpkin pie!
I am truly jealous, umgeo. I'll trade with you! Thankgiving dinner is not meant to be eaten with chopsticks.
It may not meant to be eaten with chop sticks but after eating turkey for both thanksgiving and christmas for 25 years it gets repetitive. And it's so much more fun to eat food with chop sticks!! :-P
haha Tiff, your stuffing sounds pretty good. gimmie some!
haha Total opposite here, umgeo. After being stuck eating Chinese food for every special occasion, there's nothing I would revel in more than eating turkey, mashed, and stuffing on Xmas and Thanksgiving! (Well, we get turkey on Xmas, just because we go to a more Westernized Chinese house for dinner.)
You know it's sad when having pizza or steak for dinner is considered a "lucky day". It's a novelty here.
hahahah wow how different things are. Pizza is what I eat when I dont want to cook. My family has never really eaten steak (which is fine by me).
I got so tired of turkey on christmas that we now have goose which is a wonderful change!!!
But still home cooked chinese food I'm coming over for a different holiday then! :-P heheh
Growing up, my friends thought I was f***ed in the head when I would invite myself over for dinner when the parents made meatloaf.
Although I would say that Chinese food has more variety than Western good (not incl. European food like pasta - I mean burgers and fries, etc.) but the West trumps Asians for dessert by far.
Edit : What's GOOSE like??
Do asian's really have desert? sorry I don't mean to be ignorant...the only things I have heard of are tempora... (fill in the blank ice cream, banana's, cheesecake...etc) and green tea ice cream....
No i understand that everyone craves for what they don't have...and meatloaf made properly is great! But so is homemade chinese food!! :-P
Don't worry about the ignorance. I dont' think Chinese desserts are very popular so they're not as well known. We've got pastries and cakes and we also have desserts in a soup base, usually sweet with beans or something. And the Japanese have more variety for desserts (like cheesecake, etc). Thing I don't like about Chinese cakes are they're very light with whipcream and fruit but that's pretty much it. It's not rich or sweet enough for me.
But enough of this threadjack! How's Thankgiving going for you? Do Americans really have big day-after-TG sales? Because I might drive down to WAshington thsi weekend if the price is right!
Ugh friday is the worst day in the world for shopping. Everything is on sale BUT the stores are packed with people! And I mean PACKED! I have been to places where they only let a few people into a store when people leave the store...it can get that bad!
Ohg well I'm heading home. Have a happy Thanksgiving...enjoy the food :-P
Yeah. I work at Chick-Fil-A (A fast food restaraunt)and we are located right infront of a mall, AND I have to work on Friday. God, it is going to be HELL!!!!
What are we eating at my house? The better question is what are they serving at a local restaurant tomorrow.
I eat A LOT!!!!!!!!! Many of the traditional T-Day -- but I have a recipie that in the past 12 years has become a tradition in my home and many others...my sister calls it "Sweet Potatoe Shi*t" (don't stop reading)
2 lbs sweet potatoes (bake in skin at 350 until soft -- aprox 1hour)
1 lb baby carrots (in sautee pan cover with chicken stock and half stcik of butter and two tablespoons of sugar -- bring to boil until butter sizzles -- if carrots not soft, add more stock until more sizzle and fork/knife goes through carrot)
Transfer both cooked sweet potatoes (no skins of course) and carrots (with butter remnants) into food processor with a full stick of butter and half cup of creme fresche -- puree until all is smooth -- salt and pepper to taste
This is like eating CANDY -- yes it is rich and decadent, but it's the holidays....

I am alone for Thanksgiving as usual/ But I always make myself a small Turkey. It happens to be my favorite kind of meat and I make it all year round. I don't cook anything in large quantities because it is just me. When the turkey is all carved, I like to take the carcass and make mushroom barley soup with it in my crockpot.
aww Yenta, come over to my thanksgiving dinner
. No one should be alone on holidays.
Is kosher turkey really expensive? I know here, kosher chicken is about 3 times the price of the "usual" chicken.
Yenta
that reminds me of a great barley side dish -- simple...cook one cup of barley in stock
sautee an onion in olive oil with clove of garlic until trnslucent
Add cooked barley
Add 1 TBS fres rosemary (copped) (or any other savory herb)
add zest of one lemon
add juice of the zested lemon
salt pepper to taste
Serve and enjoy
Goes great with poultry and just about any meat

Yenta, you can come to my house for Thanksgiving.
I'm often on the road for Thanksgiving.
Last year I had an elegant dinner with a view of The White House. This year I'll be in Fayetteville Arkansas. Any suggestions?
