Answer me this:
Whenever I've got guy pals that address me, either verbally or in emails, they always call me "cutie", or I'm described as being "cute". I mean, my friendship with them is totally platonic, but what does it mean to be "cute"? Does it mean that I'm not hot or sexy, or even pretty? I'm just cute? It's not like I'm 12 years old, people! Am I being likened to a Cabbage Patch Kid, or a Tickle Me Elmo? THOSE are cute. Or is that a heterosexual guy's nickname equivalent to "you've got a great personality"??
Please. Enlighten me. What gives??

Youre like a little sister. Or Kristin Chenoweth. Or a puppy.
Whichever is less insulting.

I'm not sure I agree with Adam.
"I mean, my friendship with them is totally platonic"
uh huh.
Just remember what Billy Crystal had to say about that in "When Harry Met Sally"
I have friends that I am 100% platonic with. I don't call them cutie, honey, dear, etc.
In my circle, a "cutie" is someone who is hot, but might be a little young to get busy with. Now that might be different amound your friends depending on thier age.

It is possible to be cute AND hot!

I also get the feeling that NYadGal is cute... but probably HOT
Umm... no...
Cute isn't hot. But sometimes, that's preferrable. Cute appears to be a more "everyday" description, whereas one can be hot, if gussied up to look hot. Cute is also a combo of being good looking AND having a good personality. Afterall, one can be hot but dumb as a doornail...
Jockstrap.
Cutie means 'even though we're platonic friends I'd still be interested in seeing you naked.'

"Cutie means 'even though we're platonic friends I'd still be interested in seeing you naked.'"
that's the best answer yet.
"umm... no..."
Hey Cookie - are you saying I'm not cute or not hot?
Are you trying to put words in my mouth, NYadgirl? Not without a few pommy margaritas, you don't! :P
But for clarification purposes, my "umm... no..." was originally directed at the cute AND hot combo. Upon reflection, there are always exceptions to the rule...
Have a pommy margarita, Cookie!
Cheers!

I'm a hot cutie. hows that.
Alright. I'm in my twenties. The guys are 27 and 30. Does this make a difference? So it's not necessarily meaning that they just want to address me as something endearing and "cutie" is the closest they can get without stepping over the platonic line? (And BTW Rodney, I do agree with you about the When Harry Met Sally reference.)
And please don't ever suggest that I'm anything akin to Kristin Chenoweth. Please. (I know, the truth hurts.)
I have used cutie, cute stuff, or babe when I am interested in the girl but I don't want to appear like I am. I'd never use it if I didn't think that the girl was attractive, and I'd never use it if I didn't have a lot of positive feelings for her. "Babe" gets overused lately, but anything with the c-word is usually meaningful.
I think Kerry Butler and Elizabeth Hasselbeck are cuties.
I think Charlize Theron and Ashley Judd are hotties.
Hotties and cuties are equally as attractive in my lexicon, but cuties are usually more fun to hang out with. (Because cutie includes a good - perhaps perky - personality, and hottie is all about looks and attitude.) I fall for cuties.
Just my opinion of course, it's different for all of us.
In my book, the term is one of endearment, and definitely a compliment.

Cutie isn't a bad thing at all... at least not from where I'm standing. Though I much prefer names like 'baby' and 'sweetie' to 'cutie', I would find it endearing anyway. I think maybe it's being read into a little much... Honestly, it could just be their nature to call people pet names too; I know I call everyone 'darlin', but only call my favorite hot man 'baby' and 'sexy'.
Don't think it's a bad thing or that you're not hot, or beautiful, or pretty. It's really just a term of endearment for someone they care about -- whether it's on a friendship level or more than that.

I have always greatfully accepted all compliments regardless of the context. At some point they will stop coming and you will miss them.

I'm always called a cutie by my guy pals. They also call me sweeties---or will say that girl is a sweetie. I dont know what they mean.
See above. Sweetie is in the cutie group.
I am the king of the pet name, in case you lovelies hadn't noticed. I call everyone dollface, babydoll, sweetie, sweetheart, honey, darlin, cutie, gorgeous, etc etc....Do I have any hidden meanings for some of them....maybe. It's honestly hard to say what people are thinking when they use names like that.

I personally hate 'babe', it reminds me of the pig or Britney Spears. Which remind me of each other... anyway, I think cute means, 'I will date you, you're attractive and have a good personality, but if something hotter comes along you're history.' But this is coming from a girl. It's just my interpretation.

I am known the world over as "cute". No, it's not a bad thing, but sometimes, you just want to be something else-anything else!
