Idina's large fan base absolutely revolves around the fact that she originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway. I think that any other actress, barring someone who would have truly done terribly in the role, would have garnered the same attention and possibly the Tony simply because of the strength of the character.

That being said, I have a lot of respect for Idina. I think that her vocals are absolutely amazing and agree that she brings a certain something special to every role she takes on.

Didn't you know all Idina threads are banished off to the Off Topic and Student Boards? There's no true rationale behind it. Though in my head I can began to picture the banal explantion that will be given, if one is.

What exactly makes Idina so special?

Well, there is already a eloquent post up there with which I wholly agree...but because I feel like procrastinating, onward with my repetitively crappy reasoning!!!

Personally, when I see Idina perform, there is this resonance, this ambiance that just draws you in and demands your attention. I have the sense that she owns what she is doing—she’s focused, she’s vulnerable, she’s there, and frankly I don’t want to take my eyes off of her. Idina has a wonderful voice—it’s edgy, it’s different, it stands out.

There is of course the whole Wicked component, that you can take in to account for her younger fan base. Then there’s her role in RENT. Originating key female characters in each work sort of brings a “No duuuuh” as to why she has an abundance of younger fans. Like it or not, the events which have occurred during the end of her run at Wicked, just sort of adds to the appeal for your already semi-dedicated fans. It just so happens that these roles are what have made Idina more “mainstream” amongst that demographic that we all love. Does that make her special? No. Timing, a bit of luck, lots & lots of talent, the aura, and a bit of attitude. That’s what makes Idina special in my book.
