What happened to teen comedies?

Teen movies now are very poorly written and all about sex and sight gags. What happened to the great teen comedies of yesteryear (Ferris Buller, 16 candles, The Breakfast Club, Heathers, etc.)? The only one that I can think of that comes close to matching the brilliance of those that I just mentioned is MEAN GIRLS. I wish John Hughes would come back and write some more great teen comedies to become classics.

Me too. I love John Hughes! He was brilliant. It really is too bad, because I'm kind of ashamed of my generations idea of a good film. They just don't make them like they used to.

Yes, CLUELESS is great. BRING IT ON, too.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

I was also going to say "Clueless", I think it was "the" teen comedy of the 90's.
Also, I really thought "She's The Man" was a cute comedy, well done, engaging, and cheesy, yet, not disrespectul toward anyone and very well acted.
But the best teen comedy of the 2000's goes to "Saved"!!!
Fantastic!!!
"Georgia Rule" was a teen comedy, I guess, although it dealt with some not-comedic issues.
Am I the only one who hated "Mean Girls"?

MEAN GIRLS is classic.

BRING IT ON is great, too.

Mean Girls is a great movie.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

Yeah, but none of them can compete with Farmer Ted. Or uses the phrase " Neo-Maxi-zoom dweebie"

re: What happened to teen comedies?

But even the "Bring it On's" or "Clueless's" aren't being made anymore. Now, it is all fart jokes and sexual humor (which is fine, but not when EVERY comedic moment are those).

re: What happened to teen comedies?

Saved didn't have all that. Did you watch it Spider? You have to, if you haven't.

LOVED Saved. But, those are few and far between. And it wasn't even really mainstream.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

I'd add "Can't Hardly Wait" to the string of good, enjoyable teen comedies that came along in the 90's.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Oh my God, Saved. It's totally up there with Mean Girls.
One time, Patti LuPone punched me in the face...

It was awesome.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

I don't get how you guys can compare "Mean Girls" to "Saved"? What was so good about the 1st? The typical gay stereotype? The cheesy blonde cheerleader that looked 35yo? It was too cliche for my taste. I remember that I brought a guy I was seeing back then to see the movie with me, and he held it against me and told me I'd never ever pick a movie again, then I had to go and see Shrek, and a bunch of movies that I'd never had seen otherwise.
Anyways, I recently watched "The Perfect Man" with Hilary Duff, Heather Locklear, Chris Noth and Carolynne Rhea, and it was one of the worst movie I have ever seen.
After I watched it, I went online and found hilarious critics reviews of the film, such as "It is to be endured rather than enjoyed.", "What sin did Heather Locklear commit to deserve her role in The Perfect Man?","Far-from-perfect","The Perfect Man is so imperfect that it may qualify as one of the summer's worst movies."
Also "Step Up" was beyond cheesy.

muscle, what made you think those movies would be good in the first place? I enjoyed "Mean Girls" and "Shrek," but "Step Up" and "The Perfect Man"? Are you serious?

Lol, somethingwicked.

I'm suprised you didn't find Mean Girls funny, muscle. I thought it was hilarious.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

Haha!!! That was true, I didn't expect "The Perfect Man" to be good, but, since Heather Locklear and Chris Noth(from Sex/City) were in it, I figured it could be a decent movie, since I thought they were somehow selective with their projects, well, I was wrong, they must be unemployed in order to agree to star in that awful flop.
A friend actually recommended me "Step Up" and Channing Tatum was in it, so it was more of an eye candy kinda movie. It was so bad, that I didn't enjoy it, actually I don't find Tatum attractive anymore after watching that.
I also saw "Raise your Voice" and "Cinderella Story" with Hilary Duff, it seems I never learn my lesson! Both of them, terrible.

Oh, and "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" wasn't too bad, and it had a nice musical in the end.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

Even though you honestly can't compare the two, I would put the 80s teen comedy and the 90s teen comedy (most of them, anyway) into the same category, that category being that they just aren't seen anymore. The new millenium teen comedy is not something that I would put in my generations list of strong suits, at all. I think Lindsay Lohan can't act, so I didn't fancy Mean Girls. Saved was definitely awesome, though.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

Mean Girls is on right now acutally. It was a movie I actually avoided seeing because of Lindsey Lohan, but I love it. I think the whole premise is genius.

Ooh...I also loved Never Been Kissed. Can watch it over and over. Drew is so winning in that movie.

re: What happened to teen comedies?

I just watched it on TNT, too!

00's: Mean Girls and Saved (my favorite of the two).

90's: Clueless

80's: Ferris.
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...
