What is the poorest you've ever been?

Have you ever been so poor that you didn't know what or if you would eat at the end of the day? You had no idea if you would be able to be fed?

I, thankfully, had never been THAT poor but my parents are going through a rough financial time right now due to divorce and economy.

I've never been that bad, but I'm sorry to hear about your parent's situation.

Graduate School! Lived on student loans minus tuition and books leaving very little else for much fun. I generally had enough to eat, but sometimes very quesionable nutritional content - thank goodness, but rent was very often late. No new clothes for three years - looked for free booze, and very often lived off the kindness of friends who were better funded than me. Low point in my pride level! Gave up professional haircuts, no theatre fun, lots of free graduate school sponsored activities.

However, those lean years gave me my basis now. But you know your wardobe was pathetic when your own dirt poor, dirt farmer of a father indicates his pleasure when you are able to afford something new when you finally get that first paying job after school. Even he noticed the improvement.

I read somewhere that in America more than 50% of marriages now end in divorce. Only one in ten married couples consider their marriage to be happy and successful, the balance stay together in a less than happy situation. If it were a game of chance, I might consider the risk if the potential payoff were great. But marriage depends on things that cannot be quantified numerically. I'm single and building up my security independently.

I've spent a couple summers busking in Europe. I was homeless in that I didn't have a base. Some days money would come in but sometimes it didn't. I always had food. Food is cheap. Finding a place to sleep was more the issue. I stayed with friends and friends of friends, hostels, pensions, wild-camped in more rural areas. I never did street prostitution, though I received many offers and at times it was tempting. I was never alone. I ended up with money at the end of the seasons because when I got a good amount of money I'd wire it to a bank account then not have access to it until later, so I learned to live poor. Actually, it was one of the most adventurous experiences of my life. Looking back, I thinks I was nuts to do it.

I moved out right after high school graduation, and there were lots of time when I didn't know where I was going to get food or how to pay the rent for the trailer I was living in. The food situation generally worked out because I took a job in the kitchen of a nursing home and was able to eat there. Walked in the snow and rain through fields to get to work when my ****ty car would break down. I took it one month at a time, was eventually able to get into school and did whatever I had to do (legally) to make sure I didn't have to stop, managed to get through law school on student loans, and now am okay. I have a mortgage sized student loan load, but I can deal with that.

So now I find myself pretty unsympathetic when I encounter people who whine about their situation but do nothing to change it. Been there, done that.

when i was on the non-eq dinner theatre circuit in the 70s, the only food I ate was the buffet we were allowed to sneak down to before each show. My pittance salary went for insurance on my gigantic gas guzzling ancient pontiac.

To paraphrase Daisy Campbell, I've never been poor - only without funds. Like right now. I have a roof over my head and there's food in the fridge. Tomorrow's looking a little shaky, but today (the poorest to date) isn't too bad.

The going gets particularly tough when you get older and have limited physical abilities. When that happens, 'poor' becomes pretty scary.

College - I didn't actually have enough loans to cover my third year, and work barely covered rent and food. I had oatmeal for dinner lots of nights. I ended up having to drop out because I couldn't pay up, and now I have a few thousand dollars I still owe the school. Once I pay that off, I'll be able to go back and finish my degree.

Right now I have a job that doesn't pay a ton, but it meets my needs. I'm chipping away at the school debt and when that's gone it'll be a huge load off my shoulders. But I did save enough to buy a car (just this week, actually) and it is the first time in my life I've had my own car - VERY exciting. So although I make less than $30K, I feel VERY rich right now. re: What is the poorest you've ever been?

Pretty much at this very moment. Damned credit cards.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson

I have been very poor. Now I have a decent job and a steady place to live. You would think that going through poor times, I would learn to save in case another dry spell occurs. But no, I'm spending money like Daddy Warbucks!
