I'm going to be a bit selfish here.
Yesterday at the end of my long train ride home, I checked Facebook. I got an unsolicited picture from the NY Historical Society, for no known reason. I saw a picture from the 1983 Pride March...and who is holding the banner? My Uncle Peter! I started to bawl on the effing train!
Uncle Peter is the fellow with the beard, second from right. This was my second Gay Pride March, thanks to him. I still lived in Philly, but would move to NYC the following year. I'd also join him in volunteering at the Community Health Project, now the Callen-Lourde Community Center. Peter eventually became a board member, and I ended up working at their AIDS clinic.
He died of a heart attack in 1999, and I miss him so much. Our lives revolved around the community and the crisis threatening us. That's why it's the biggest event for me.
