What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

I'm curious- what is the biggest event to happen in your lifetime? Interpret it as you wish- what changed the world, what was the most observed, most influential, most discussed- Whatever you think it means. I'm still mulling my response but I will weigh in shortly.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Personally, the death of my mother in 2001. It's been 11 years, so I'm mostly over it, and I don't want to make this a pity party.

Socially, I think that's the way to describe it, is the attack on the World Trade Center and how it affected the world.

I would put the last SCOTUS decisions somewhere lower on the list. Big events sure, but not as big as 9/11 on the world scale.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Honestly? The day I realized what a ****ty childhood I actually had, and by extention, what horrible grandparents by kids have.

A shame, really.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'm going to have to say 9/11. Nothing is the same.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Do you think 9/11 was so influential because of it in itself or the massive amount of media coverage? I think so many people watching it happen gave it tremendous impact.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

I would have to say 9/11 as well. I think for my generation, it's a sort of where were you when it happened type moment. And it's really shaped the world we've grown up in- as I type this, I realize that this country has been in a state of basically constant war since I was 9 years old, which is really terrifying to think about. 9/11 was the catalyst to really change so much of the world we live in, often for the worst.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Losing a childhood best friend to AIDS in 2001. He and I had been somewhat distant for years after we went off to college in far away states and subsequently landed jobs on different coasts. When rumors surfaced that he was gay I (like several other childhood buddies) dodged him on the occasions that we were both back home visiting family and old friends.

My mom called me in mid-Jan of that year to do something which I've always strongly disliked...that is read the friggin' local obituaries from back home. She began to cry while reading his because it came as a surprise to both of us. She attended the funeral but I was unable to due to work-related travel and the short notice.

His death caused a major riff between my dad and me after he joked "you see, that's why I told you not to hang around that lil' f... years ago". That was clearly a turning point in my life in that I decided at the moment to embrace everyone as he or she is because life is sometimes fleeting. I can't get the time back to make amends with him for being a dick.

I would say 9/11 also. It had the most wide-ranging impact of anything in my lifetime. It still has impact today and will for the foreseeable future.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

For my generation, 9/11 happened in elementary school, so while I don't have many memories of it, it would probably be up there. I'd also add for my generation, the rising acceptance of same-sex marriage and Obama's election.

I haven't had much loss and coming out of the closet wasn't a big deal to me or my family, so probably graduating high school? I'm not this boring in real life, I swear.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Seeing I lived three blocks from the Twin Towers and actually walked to the site after the first tower fell to see if I could help, I would have to say 9/11 on a personal and World changing way.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

It's not so much the attack itself, it was the worlds response to it. Laws were made. Policies changed. Wars started. People killed.

Hell, GWB got a second term off it.

"Do you think 9/11 was so influential because of it in itself or the massive amount of media coverage?"

I think 9/11 was the day America lost its childhood. We were always the "young" nation being only 200 years old. Being attacked in that manner required us to grow up fast.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Yeah, 9/11 and intervening while a college roommate beat up his girlfriend are tied for second after the loss of a good friend. Both acts constantly remind me of the evil that human beings are capable of doing and completely removed any naiveté I'll ever have in this lifetime.

Joe, I know you limited it to a single event but my earlier life was somewhat colorful.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

However you want to respond is fine by me-

I almost said AIDS- not just the people I personally lost but the whole generation of talent and brains- the plays unwritten, the songs unsung, the problems unsolved. Who knows what would be different now if those people were here.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

My answer is not as universally life-changing as 9/11. It's more personal.

I've had a pretty eventful life and some major ones at that, but there's one that absolutely changed my life overnight. It's going to sound very silly and nonsensical but it's the damn truth.

The day after I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I was a different person than I was the day before. The message in the film must have shot a wakeup bullet into the real me that was dormant somewhere inside.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

There are a lot of great answers in this thread.

I think the rise of the internet age is the single biggest event in my generation. I was old enough when the web showed up to remember what it was like before hand, and young enough to completely grasp it as a functional tool right away.

AIDS is a big one too, on a personal level. Also my brother's suicide by self immolation which believe it or not knocked me out of the closet.

If AIDS can be counted as a "single event," then I will say the single biggest event in my lifetime is the Internet.

It has changed everything we know and everything we do.

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

My first orgasm was pretty wacky.

I had heard the phrase "I'm coming," but I didn't think it was THAT.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

What is the single biggest event in your lifetime?

Bad: The day my anxiety disorder first reared its head. I was thirteen and the world blew apart.

Good: Seeing Sutton Foster in Little Women - March 4, 2005. I was twelve. Theatre's been in my blood ever since.
