if your destination is West side of NYC -- EWR is easier
East side put LGA.
JFK takes the most time of the three to get into mid-town.
Personally I am partial to Newark as it it easy to get in and out and tend to have fewer delays than LGA (Of course, that is a relative term)

plus, newark, nj (EWR) is usually much cheaper than the ny airports. you would then just have to take the train into penn station and now there's a shuttle from the airport to the train.
edit: to be more clear. there's now a separate stop at newark (liberty) international airport on njtransit. so, if you fly into newark, you take the shuttle to the train to penn station.
make sure you get off at new york penn station and NOT newark penn station. i don't know why they did that, because i've seen many people get off at newark penn station thinking they are in manhattan.

Posted: 8/22/05 at 3:20pmI had a very good experience with JFK's AirTrain, which connects you to the subway. You can be in midtown in a snap, and it only costs $7.50 instead of $45. That's a JFK perk in my book. (I believe EWR has an AirTrain too, but I have no experience with it)

Newark and JFK have the Airtrain and it makes them so easy to get to and from. LGA still has only bus service and that can get ugly. Even though it is the 'closest' airport to Manhattan it is the hardest to get to.
NJ Transit has made a special stop for Newark Airport (28 r/t). The monorail is right there.
The JFK Airtrain leaves from Jamaica station on the Long Island Railroad. You can take the subway to a closer stop but the Airtrain still costs whatever it costs and the ride is a lot less pleasant. Take the LIRR.
Welcome to New York.

Posted: 8/22/05 at 5:49pmIf an international flight- Newark & Kennedy are really yr only choices. But that being said I prefer Newark too. I Usually take the bus into Port Authority (20.00 rnd trip) cos I usually stay 3 blocks away.

Just to be picky (I've been watching a lot of Monk), let me mention that there are two airports in NYC, LaGuardia and JFK, both in the borough of Queens, and there's also Newark Airport, over in New Jersey. I assume your question is which is closest to the borough of Manhattan?
#17re: What's the closest airport to NYC?
Posted: 8/22/05 at 9:36pmWell most international flights come through JFK, and if it's in the US, it's LGA. I don't like Newark, it's a long drive. But I guess if you're taking public transportation...eh.

If, Newark, take a bus to Port Authority.
LGA is fine--grab a cab to Manhattan.
Bravo, Tony--Queens IS NYC, too.

I live in the village, and I like flying into LaGuardia because it's a much cheaper cab ride.
But alas, I go to JFK a lot as well...it's not too bad.

Posted: 8/23/05 at 3:01amJFK has the new AIRTAIN which zips you up to the Jamaica train station and you can then take the train to Manhattan. Forget the cab rides.
#21re: What's the closest airport to NYC?
Posted: 8/23/05 at 9:10amThe AIRTRAIN rules, it's a great and easy trip.
#22re: What's the closest airport to NYC?
Posted: 8/23/05 at 9:14am$12 bus ride, LGA to Grand Central Station....I only fly into LaGuardia.....cheap and easy! and the bus is fast!
#23re: What's the closest airport to NYC?
