Posted: 8/25/06 at 11:20amI worked at Best Buy. If you think managers with Limited Inc are bad go work there? We had to trick customers into buying these replacement and extended warranty plans which in all reality didn't cover anything. If you tried to use the plan you basically had to get the president of the company to Ok it. I can't even begin to describe the BS we went through. At one point I worked in loss prevention and they tried to get me to fish cd cases out of a toilet where some kid had stolen the cds, ditched the cases in the toilet and then peed on them. I told them that it wasn't in my job description to handle human waste and 3 cds wasn't worth that mess. The final straw was when they threatened to fire me for going back to school full time. Another male employee with a higher ranking position than mine was working full time and going to school full time, but they wouldn't let me. So I put in my two weeks notice, but from that day on they hounded me about sales numbers and preformance. I couldn't walk two steps without a manager harrassing me so I went to lunch and never came back. If you want more examples go to www.bestbuysux.org

I worked at Wendys one summer in college. It wasn't so bad, I was that person in the first window at the drive through who takes your money, but the people were horrible. I know it's always impossible to understand drive through people, but they can't hear you any better. Also just because someone works in a low paying job does not make them your b*tch.
My favorite was when a woman kept insisting that we were giving her the wrong size cup for her frosty because they're smaller than the comparable size for soft drinks. After she yelled at 2 drive through employees and 3 managers she told us she was going to call the customer service number and complain. The manager just said, "What are you going to tell them? That you ordered a frosty and we tried to give it to you?"

Posted: 8/25/06 at 3:16pmBlu, we had a manager once laugh in a customer's face and when they pressed the issue about getting the "promised" services (we are told to tell the customer anything to get them to buy the plans- I NEVER pushed them on people even though we could have been fired for not doing so) the manager told them to get the f**k out of his store. It was horrible.

Ouch, Yenta. :)
My worst job was my first one when I was 17 - I worked at a swanky girls' summer camp in the stable and basically I shoveled s*** all the live long day. In the summer. In the heat. For $50 per week, 6 days/week. The only redeeming factor in the whole thing was I could ride any of the horses any time when they weren't being used for classes. :)

Wow, Kel. I had no idea Best Buy was so bad. Express wasn't quite that awful. My biggest beefs were the floor sales tactics and the credit cards. Anyone who's ever been inside any Limited Brands store can attest to this: As soon as you walk in the door, an associate will pounce on you by:
1) Welcoming you
2) Asking if they can help you find anything
3) Giving you each and every sale and special that day
4) Mentioning the damn credit card
5) A "breakaway statement" wherein they state that they'll be nearby in the extremely unlikely event that you need help
1 and 2 were the only things I did on a regular basis. What made the card such a pain in the ass was we were expected to talk about it everywhere: Up front, at the cash wrap, in the fitting rooms. Every transaction was expected to include a plug for the card. Basically, the more I was badgered to do something, the less likely I was to do it. So I didn't even talk about the damn things. Considering how little I talked up sales and how few cards I opened, I'm honestly surprised they didn't fire me...

Elphaba, when my parents got divorced I was eight, so for a number of years I saw my dad on Wednesday nights as well as weekends (until I got a social life, and Wednesdays were used for other endeavors) - and the Wednesday night treat was dinner at Burger Chef!
I LOVED it.

God, I used to LOVE Burger Chef. I thought it was just a Kansas thing... back in the '60s.

Apparently not, old man.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 10:07pmThe worst job I've ever had is the one I currently have, working for a somewhat well-known book store chain. I can't stand dealing with people and their noisy, spoiled and destructive children. Nobody has any manners these days, as far as I'm concerned.

Posted: 8/25/06 at 11:11pmI used to work for Limited brands when I worked at Bath and Body Works. I loved that job. We had to do the add on sales on the floor and at the wrap desk, but we didn't have to push a credit card. We just had to make sure that we greeted each customer. No real hasseling was involved. Limited has nothing on Best Buy...I could go on for DAYS about that evil place.

That's one thing B&BW has over the other stores: It doesn't have its own card. You can, however, use the Express card there, which was another aspect we had to push.
And they're getting pushier. You can't enter any Ltd. Brands store now without being hounded by employees. Although B&BW isn't as bad. I can't decide if Express or Victoria's Secret is worse when it comes to pushy associates (and managers!)

When I was in Jr. High, I had a job at a local bridge club making coffee, serving drinks, and clearing out the ash trays.
I am pretty sensitive to smoke to this day, and I think it must have been because of this job.
A whole bunch of old folks drinking coffee and soda, and smoking for hours on end while they played bridge.
Yuck.
I also worked at the credit department of JC Penney during the Christmas holiday season, as well as the gift wrap department. I never thought I would want to wrap gifts but that was better than some of the people standing in line either contesting charges or begging for credit the day before Christmas.
Talk about all the motivation one needs to stay in school and get a degree!

Good point.
Although the last time I went to papa's for a "fitting," we were the only ones there.

Speaking of rude drive-thru customers, here is tonight's example from my work:
ME: Here's your three-dollar scoop of vanilla ice cream. Have a great night!
LADY IN CAR: mumble, mumble, mumble...
ME: Sorry, what was that?
LADY IN CAR: LID!!!
ME: Oh, okay, sure.
[I hand the woman a lid.]
ME: Is that a dog in the backseat? Did you want a puppy cup?
LADY IN CAR: [rolls eyes] Why else would I bring my dog to an ice cream place?
ME: Okay, here's your puppy cup.
LADY IN CAR: LLLLIIIIIIIDDDD!!!!!1!!@
ME: Deep breath, anger management... Oh, sorry.
[I hand the woman a lid. For 1/2 ounce of ice cream smashed in the bottom of a 3-inch tall cup. How this could possibly spill, I do not know.]
ME: Have a good night!
LADY IN CAR: [Spits her gum out in the tip jar and peels out of the parking lot.]
ahmelie: Are you implying that twinkies and lesbians are bad? BITCH!
