Shirley better watch out. Those Mennonites watch out for their own. They look like a peaceful group but they don't use those pitchforks for hay.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

henrik, I didn't read MacLaine's book, so I don't know whether she believes in karma or simply that individuals create their own realities (including diseases). Either way, I doubt she said such individuals are unworthy of compassion and aid.

The belief that individuals accept certain challenges (ALS, in Hawking's case) for specific reasons is a matter of faith, of course, but it strikes me as far less hateful than the belief that God visits such afflictions on individuals deliberately for reasons known only to Him (something 2 billion Christians and 1+ billion Muslims supposedly believe).

And who's to say say if Hawking would have accomplished as much without the challenges he has overcome? I doubt if even he knows.

I haven't read her either, Jane2, but how is her observation - if it is being reported accurately and fairly (which it may not) - not about karma and reincarnation? And how are these concepts not a part of her spirituality?

It's not about going after someone just because of his/her creeds. It's about objecting when someone's expressions or actions of/from his/her creed demean or hurt others.

I was agreeing with Jane. And let's not forget that this thread was started two years after the offending book was published (not that I believe what is allegedly in it is there) and aims to imagine what a dumb Hollywood spiritualist would have to say about an event that just happened based on what she supposedly said once.

An exercise in futility I mean.
