I am Paul in "Company" right now, and the director is clearly concerned about my age versus the woman playing Amy. I am 28, and the woman playing Amy is in her mid 30's. He is uncomfortable to the point that he is making comments such as "What do I do with this, so it doesn't look inappropriate." Now granted, I don't look 28, but am 6'2 so it can be believable with the right hair, makeup, wardrobe.
The biggest concern I have is with the blocking of the Amy/Paul scene after "Getting Married Today." He has Paul on one side of the stage for most of the scene and Amy on the other. So instead of comforting or encouraging Amy, I'm delivering my lines from 20 feet away most of the time. And we hug instead of kiss. The rest of the couples kiss...and some, heavily.

What is your venue? Maybe he's being cautious because it's a more regarded venue...?
In any event, while that seems strange; don't comment on it. Or if you should, just pull him aside personally and ask what all the hub-ub is really about (assuming you haven't already). I would agree it it a strange decision for such a small age difference o_o

Private chat with the director. Refer to the actress as "that withered hag playing Amy."

Isn't he the one that cast you? Methinks he ought to do his second-guessing out of the earshot of the actors.
That was my first thought. If he didn't think it was a problem when casting, why now?
"What would you do if the director?"
Did what? Feels he made a casting mistake?
Talk to him.
I agree. Best thing you can do is talk to him. Hope it gets resolved.

Carefully make the creative suggestion that you and Amy want to play the age difference subtly and would appreciate direction how to do that. However you also feel strongly that the audience needs to accept that you two are a couple.
Either that or sleep with the insecure little turd director's other half. Male, female, doesn't matter...
