re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

Thanks for that link, tazber! I cannot wait. I love 70s Streep!

No one has mentioned her supporting role in "Julia" with Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave.

Based on Lilian Hellman's memoir - which turned out to be a total blatant lie!

Yes someone did:

"I first remember her from The Deer Hunter and I think that in that same year, or the year before, she had a very small role in the film Julia."
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"

I am a huge fan of Meryl so I was surprised when I read that Katherine Hepburn was not a fan of hers. She sited the reasons pointed out in PAB's first reply. I love her though and her great sense of humor.

On imdb.com it says she was Hepburn's least favorite screen actress (of Streep's generation I assume).
Then again, I believe Bette Davis considered her her successor.
She mentions in the KRAMER V. KRAMER documentary that she was working in MANHATTAN at the time she did KRAMER and at the same time was also doing THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. What a wonderful versatile woman!
Regarding what someone said about Kate Jackson being the original Johanna. I didn't know Meryl was actually supposed to play Phyllis and then was bumped up to Johanna Kramer when Jackson had to bow out.

Holocaust was an extraordinary miniseries. Streep, Fritz Weaver, Rosemary Harris, James Woods and a WONDERFUL Tovah Feldshuh. It is only surpassed by Roots, imo. I will never forget watching it...it aired in the spring and my mother had a huge and beautiful gardenia plant on top of the television...it smelled like heaven...but to this day, the smell of a gardenia fills me with such sadness.

More on her years at Yale: Supposedly she went straight from Yale to Lincoln Center, with no "actors showcase" or anything.

I have never seen it, but i am very excited to. I know it's heavy stuff, but I kinda feel like it's required viewing.

re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

We've seen alot of this since, taz...Schindler's List, Playing for Time (another holocaust telemovie that is great), but this was a first for television for it's horrifying portrayal of what happened in the ghettos and camps. It was replayed a few years ago on cable, and I messed up the taping, so didnt keep it. Thanks for letting us know about the dvd release!

and yes, required.

Doodle - that's one of the more eloquent things I've seen posted on this site. Thank you.

re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

Thanks, DG. You know...every spring I try to grow gardenias, and they always die early.

(That might be profound, if it weren't for the fact that I simply over-water them.)

re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

I remember seeing Meryl Streep being trumpeted all over the place as America's Greatest Actress when she was first hitting it big, she was on the cover of every goddamn magazine and got nominated every time she opened her mouth to speak. It was the same kind of push they tried to give to Matthew McConaughey, remember how he was going to be the next Paul Newman?

I dont remember anyone saying that about him...was this just after his starmaking turn in the remake of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"?

re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

God, no, I'm comparing the buildups they got. There was a huge campaign to make him a star, around the time of that Grisham thing he was in, A TIME TO KILL I think it was. It soon became terribly evident that little Matthew McCan'tAct was a living joke.

I remember Matthew's press attack - and as I recall, it was based primarily on his physical resemblance (most notably, his eyes.) They tried the same thing a few years later with Josh Lucas.

Another comparrison made was Brad Pitt to Robert Redford, especially during A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.

re: When Did Meryl Streep Become A Star?

Has anyone else seen Meryl in the trippy yet good "Alice at the Palace" with Debbie Allen and Michael Jeter? It's bizzare, but Meryl gives one helluva performance.
