I saw it at the Public Theater. She was jaw-droppingly inventive.

The show was a mixed bag but the cast was exhilarating.

Pab, Katherine Hepburn felt the same way about her. She said you could always see the wheels turning.

Edit: which someone else has already pointed out. :)

This may be blasphemy, but I disagree with Hepburn. I'm more on the Bette Davis camp re Streep.
What I truly admire about her is that she can turn in the most heart-breaking performances in a drama and then her next movie will be a suspenseful thriller, the next one will be a hilarious comedy, and then she can just turn around and do another drama just like that, and she'll be fantastic in all genres.
To this day, I find her performance is SOPHIE'S CHOICE to be one of the most haunting committed to the silver screen.

I haven't always been a fan of hers. Back when you risked crucifixion to suggest that she did anything other than walk on water, I sat through FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN, SOPHIE'S CHOICE and STILL OF THE NIGHT, not getting what the big deal was.

And then along came things like SILKWOOD and the interminable OUT OF AFRICA, and I still didn't get it.

I remember being very impressed with her in HEARTBURN and BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, and then later in ADAPTATION, THE HOURS, and ANGELS IN AMERICA. That little scene in ADAPTATION when she gets really stoned is one of the funniest things in recent movies.

You didn't get the big deal about SOPHIE'S CHOICE???? Really? Okay.

Anyways, apparently that whole scene in ADAPTATION was improvised as the script just said "Susan gets stoned" or something to that effect.

Nope. Never saw what the big deal is about SOPHIE'S CHOICE. She's fine, perfectly good in every way.
