When Disney Was Scary

Of the films on this list that I saw as a child none really bothered me in terms of being scared. I loved Return to Oz (as well as some of the other non-Disney films from that era that people seem to have a similar reaction to, like The Dark Crystal).

The one that I do remember having a couple of nightmares over was Mr. Boogedy. Something about the makeup design of the character just really had the terrifying effect on me.

I love Something Wicked This Way Comes! It started me on my Ray Bradbury obsession and I even have a copy of The October Country he personally autographed to me. One thing I still admire about the film is its vintage sensibility mixed with the modern effects of its day. It felt like a nod to the horror films of my father's generation while keeping my own generation in mind. I still enjoy watching it.

I remember thinking Watcher in the Woods was fun and scary when it originally screened, but now I find it just silly. I can't remember a thing about Dragonslayer except that fantasy films were quite popular at the time. Tron was actually pretty mind-blowing when it came out and I still think it's an underrated classic. And Return to Oz was just sort of weird to me.

But the one film that should be at the top of the "scary" list for Disney is The Black Hole. Even the cutesiness of the two little robots couldn't shake the evil creepiness of that ending. It was such a bizarre film at the time and I still don't know what the audience for that film was supposed to be.

As for the animated films, Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland were the two that gave me the creeps. I like Pinocchio and I LOVE Wonderland, but they are basically extended nightmare sequences.

Seeing that picture actually made me freak out and look away from my laptop (and then go and watch youtube clips, of course.) To me Mr Boogedy was Freddy Krueger. Ugh, I have no idea why my parents let me watch that and Bride of Boogedy.

Well, both Mr. Boogedy movies were aired (at least in the U.S.) as part of the Wonderful World of Disney series back in the 80s, so I'm sure there are a lot of parents who inadvertantly traumatized their children by having a nice Sunday night family movie night.

Yep. that's how I saw them. I just mentioned it to my twin sister and she remembers having many nightmares based on it. Thanks Disney! I do remember the sequel being significantly less scary, and that sorta made me feel empowered over my fear of the first one. But, man, that green glowing door....
