When the voice is shot

When the voice is shot

There are several singers who I have enjoyed more after their voice has gone, when the quality is not what it once was.

I like Billie Holiday's work more at the end of her career. The voice was a lot rougher, but somehow appealing.

Joni Mitchell's re-record of "Both Sides Now". Her voice has lowered over the years, but it gives the song more maturity than the giddy quality of the original.

Who else?

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Have you heard Wayne Newton "sing" lately?

"Have you heard Wayne Newton "sing" lately?"

I made a vow to myself several years ago that I wouldn't listen to any music that my grandmother listened to. That's why Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass are not on my Ipod.

Marianne Faithfull didn’t actually become interesting until her voice was shot. Compare her vapid Stones-era “As Tears Go By” to her devastating ’87 re-recording.

Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson & Harry Nilsson.

These three paid a terrible price for their sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyles but it brought something to the table in terms of extra texture and soul...

Liza Minnelli too, pathos and poignancy in small measures...
