Jealous would indicate that the nice Capn has something that I want. I already have my degree, worked off my tuition debt and run my own business, so no, not jealous.
Bitter? I'll concede that. Bitter and amazed that this kid feels entitled to "free money" in an amount more than the average American's annual salary.
"We got a confirmation from the government that we filed for a FAFSA" -- A confirmation from the FAFSA that the nice Capn had filed to receive financial aid does not equate with a commitment to provide it.
I am so sorry for what your parents are going through. I I realize that weighs emotionally on you.
But.....GET UP, dust yourself off, and do what YOU gotta do to get the education you want. If it means going to a school you perceived as less, DO IT.
Get one or more jobs to get what YOU want.
Granted it was a different time, but both my parents worked two jobs to get their first degrees, I worked two jobs to get my degree.
Did I hate it, YES.......but I did what I had to to get what I wanted.
Go ahead and complain a bit, then shake it off and get to work getting what YOU want.
Nowhere does it say that Higher Education is a right....do whatever you need to get it.
If you need to take a year off, and earn $$$ then do it, and apply for every damn Scholarship, grant, and loan you can if you can.
Trust me, it means nothing unless you are willing to work for what you want.
Quit bitching about the rich kids getting all they want, that does not help YOU achieve your goals.
GO FOR IT! and Good Luck!
and judging from previous posts, I know YOU can do it!
Capn, I'm sorry for everything that has happened, but people here are right. You can do this, just take a deep breath, call financial aid and see what they can do. After that start hitting the streets for a job, and not a university provided job. I supported myself all through college and was living on an income of about $15,000 a year for TWO people. Yeah we were broke and we didn't qualify for work study, no grants, just loans. I am in about $45,000 in debt right now, but I have a degree and I am proud of that. I worked crappy jobs with crappy bosses, I saved all I could and I worked my butt off in the classroom so that I could finish as fast as possible. I took summer classes so that I could fit things in quicker and cheaper. It sucks, but you can do it. Stop waiting for the university to hand you things, because you're right they don't care. You are an account number to them and nothing more. If you drop out someone else will gladly take your spot and give them money, its not a big deal to a university so you have to work for it and you have to do everything in your power to make them work for you.
Reevaluate your standards and do what you need to do to make this work. Good luck!
