And I'm not talking Hollywood politics.
Award shows used to be a great way to send a message to the world. Either for world peace, anti-war, gay rights, being green, etc. I only remember a few recent instances since September 11: Whoopi Goldberg wearing a cape, turning her back, and waving goodbye to America after hosting the Oscars -- the cape being a tribute to 9/11 heros; Michael Moore's famous "shame on you Mr. Bush" speech; Susan Sarandon giving us a simple peace sign; Dustin Lance Black's & Sean Penn's win and acceptance speeches.
Last night, I was hoping someone would mention the March on Washington next month. Didn't happen.
It's their 45 seconds to say whatever they want to the world. I would DEFINITELY use it to not only as thank yous, but to share my words for promoting peace, equality, and love.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
