Imagine a Broadway show or the New York City Ballet offering a single room and group shower to the company. And Pro sports make a LOT more money.

In fact, a recent Phillies player, a renowned womanizer, has been rumored to be quite interested in men. There are whispers in gay circles about him picking up men at Knock, a bar on Washington Square West, and taking them back to his condo. Phillies insiders still murmur about his bisexuality.
If the paragraph didn't say "recent" I'd have said "Pat Burrell". But, then again, he did resign with the Phillies so he could retire as a Phillie. Could that be "recent"?
And this is a picture that I took of Pat Burrell and David Bell. I was just snapping pictures and didn't realize what I'd captured until later. My friend tried to get Pat to sign it but he wouldn't even look it. And thanks to Jason Michaels and Geoff Geary Pat knew exactly what we had.

Big group locker rooms exist because players have to be around each other during intermission/periods/etc and they to be able to communicate with one another. It also allows the coaches to talk to them all at once.
Group showers are mainly for convenience for everyone involved. Lot easier to keep 1 big shower clean and stocked with soap and shampoo then have to keep numerous ones clean and stocked.

Wasn't it heavily speculated that Pat Burrell was Brian Wilson's leather friend aka The Machine?
