Hello,
I am directing a student-studio and we are looking at the following shows:
- Once on This Island
- Cocoanuts (by Gershwin)
- Celebration
- By Jeeves
- Working
Of these, which do you guys recommend we do? We're looking for a show that people are going to enjoy and want to see, but still is fairly small.
Working- Just with my experience of doing the show I have found that it is a really loved show
Sorry this list was out of date. I was told this morning we would not be doing working. Also Cocoanuts is out.
Any other suggestions?
Since Working is out, I'd say Once on this Island.
AH! OOTI is such a fun show. It's a great for cast member bonding and great for ensemble building. Since OOTI is mainly about the peasants being one big family, at the end of your run, I promise you'd feel that way too.
Once on this Island!!!
Is it possible to do Once On This Island without the "racial issues"? Our school is very heavily caucasian, and we usually only have one or two african american students and maybe 3 or 4 asian students audition for the "large" show.

If you heavily advertise the fact that it's by ALW, By Jeeves should probably work.
not at all...when i was in it me and one other girl were the only ethnic people, but it can just be a class difference.
Yeah, when we did it at my school, even though it was pretty racially correct, we still did it rich and poor. We changed some of the lyrics too.
FOr example: instead of They despise for our blackness.
we said, They despise us, They deny us...yadda yadda
