Exactly! Why comment in the first place? It is hard to believe you didn't know who she was. My parents don't keep up with celeb news, but even my dad knows her as the fairy godmother from Cinderella and my mom knows her as the lady who did cocaine (not nice, but it's the truth). So, you had to have heard about her at some point in your life.
Plus, like the other poster mentioned, you knew Reichen but not Whitney? That's hilarious.

Let me ask you guys if you're familiar with Adelina Patti, Renata Scotto, Barry Tuckwell, Van Cliburn, John Corigliano or Jan Peerce.
Christoph Eschenbach introduced me to John Corigliano just before the Houston premiere of his Symphony No. 1 two years before he won the Oscar for his score to The Red Violin. 49 years earlier, Van Cliburn made his debut at the age of 12 performing with the same symphony. And I know Whitney Houston's music. I wasn't particularly a fan, but I knew a few of her songs that made her a star in the 80s and when she recorded Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You in 1992, the song was pretty much unavoidable in all public arenas for years. Currently, it is being used as part of a multimedia art installation on State Street in Chicago (which began last month). And her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner for the 1991 Superbowl was so huge, it was the only recording of the national anthem to reach pop hit status as a commercially released single. And in the realm of musical theatre, she played the Fairy Godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein's third and most recent television special in 1997.

IF u have watched SNL then at the LEAST you would have seen the brilliant Maya Rudolph's take on Whitney- it was one of her signiture pieces. ( and will probably never be seen again as a result of this sad outcome. Rudolph was scheduled to host SNL Feb 18 -guess what won't be done)
The link is one of the few I can find- think a lot has been taken down

Posted: 2/11/12 at 11:14pmDollypop---Since you're throwing these names at us, Jan Peerce lived next door to my father when he was growing up in New Rochelle. My dad (at the age of nine) used to hide in Peerce's flower garden outside his window and listen to him rehearse. Jan caught him one day and invited him inside to listen to him practice. My dad was too scared and ran away.

Such a sad loss. I remember drinking with a couple of friends while listening to I Wanna Dance with Somebody a few years ago. I know, kind of lame, but we were having fun singing and dancing to it.
Now watching SNL, it reminded me of the time she was musical guest and appeared in a Mary Katherine Gallegher sketch.

Wait, Carol Channing isn't dead? I don't think that's right.
ANYway, my sister took to my first concert in 1988 and that concert was Whitney. I was 13 years old and it was one of the best nights of my young life. That was before she got crazy.
I'm reminded of Kathy Griffin's "Don't talk about me!" anecdote about Whitney.
