well, presumably, if a finalist felt REALLY strongly about not singing a patriotic song, then, I'd think they would have gotten out of it. But that would make them look horrible, because why WOULDN'T you be patriotic? just because you sing God Bless the USA doesn't mean you support the war. If you DON'T love this country, then get the hell out! how hard is that to understand?

As for the actual performances, if you actually watched some of the contestants, some of them DO HAVE increadible vocal talent! imagine that!!! Well, of course the arrangement is going to be cheesey, what else do you expect? The point is, there are some great undiscovered talent out there, and thats why I watch Idol. i'm not under the delusion that the producers/simon/whoevever don't fudge the results. The big wigs pretty much decide who will win, but thats ok.

Right on , Princess. Did you see the looks on John the redhead? He knew he had no business being there. How uncomfortable for him!

But getting back to what Namo was saying-I disagree. Yes, there are some fortunate people who are multi-talented in that they can sing, write their own music, and play it. Good for them, and I hope they find fame and fortune. But I don't blame one single kid who enters the American Idol contest. Are you kidding? Why wouldn't they want to either win or get lots of exposure on the show? The winners of the past shows have indeed achieved fame and fortune, in case you haven't kept up with it. And the runners up are also getting work on tv, and film. They'd be crazy not to take advantage of this kind of instant fame and fortune.

Let's take it to the absurd now. William Hung, the totally untalented but likeable nerd, has also achieved fame and fortune. He's enjoying his 15 minutes now. Sure, it'll probably be over soon, but not before plenty of people buy his cd. (yes, he has a cd) and if someone's nuts enough to buy it, more power to William Hung. I also heard he gets $25,000 for an appearance. Nuts? yes, but why not reap the benefits of it if you can. I'd do it if I were in the position.

Holy FREAKIN CRAP Princess. For a RENT Robot you don't seem to have ever actually listened to the lyrics of, for example What You Own.

Did you ACTUALLY just say if you don't like this country then get the hell out? Holy CRAP.

To quote Belize from Angels in America, "I don't HAVE to love America, I live here." I can't believe somebody as young as you and with such a phony air of progressiveness would actually think that let alone type it out.

actually I have all the lyrics to What You Own memorized. So what? If you don't LIKE living in this country, then you don't HAVE to. Doesn't get much simpler than that. Don't like the way things are in this country? well, the great thing is, we can VOTE and have the power to change all that! So, by my logic, it seems that people have no right to complain, since they can change whatever they don't like.

But I always hated that Angels quote. That whole play doesn't make sense. anyway. this is way off track, this is an American Idol thread ,not a political debate. i'll just let you PM me if you feel like taking this further. goodnight!!!!

What world do you live in where you think people can just decide to leave and go wherever they want and stay there? I haven't missed a single election since I was 18, and I have been politically active since I was 16 and I have never really felt that I had very much power at all. But you repeating back some sort of social studies myth is heartwarming. Of course you have the lyrics memorized, just like an American Idol contestant. But it's pretty clear that you, like them, have no idea what it is you're singing.

It's just, I gotta believe, I gotta have hope. I loved A Chorus Line and The Clash and The Ramones. There has to be some present day equivalent.

I hate to do the old fogey "in my day" thing, but in the late '70s, there isn't a self-respecting young person who wouldn't have laughed the notion of American Idol right off the air.

Zola....if you saw tonight's performance, I think you now know that Elton John music does ANYTHING but serve him. That was so awful that I actually thought Simon went easy on him.

Yeah, that was embarrassing. I think Elton's songs are difficult for some people to sing (Elton's a genius) and not many of the kids tonight were up to it. I like Fantasia, but her voice isn't suitable for this kind of music. She's too high and shrieky, you know, just like Nell Campbell's was. Anyway, not a good night. George probably was the best.

It was dreary. When I think of this point in the competition last year ... when we had a range of choices, and some wonderful performances ... well, there's no comparison. Other than George, the men simply are so out of their league, and hardly worthy of their ascendency. Jennifer scored at the end, making this a 4 way competition among the talented African-American quartet. Who can go? Try everyone else. John and Jon are getting worse, not better. I find it painful to watch them have to take the withering -- but justifiable -- critiques. I'm with THE VIEW's Star Jones; it ain't as much fun this year. Watching inept, colorless (and sometimes just poor) performances labeled thusly -- where's the pleasure in that?

I actually enjoyed all the performances EXCEPT John Stevens!!! lordy he is horrible, and keeps getting worse. He WANTS t oget kicked off!!! it was so bad it was funny.

I actually liked Camilles performances, and i won't mind seeing JPL stay on a bit longer. Neither of the mdeserve to leave before Red. But his idiot fans would keep him in no matter how bad he does! they think every performances is "cute!" it makes me sick.

All in all I don't think the show was as bad as the judges said. But Johns time is definetely up, but i am SO SCARED about tomorrow night!!!!

ok jon stevens has got to go! i'm from his hometown and everyone and i mean everyone here is voting for him including all the high schools and annoying teenage girls, it's really pissing me off. he doesn't deserve to be in the competition anymore he's out of his league. the other jon...i have no comment he's horrible and if latoya is in the bottom 3 again tomorrow i'm going to stop watching the show because that's just wrong
