Besides the fact that everything is cooler there, Japan is one of the greatest countries in the world. Talent comes before beauty. As long as you are more reserved about things, they are more open and accepting towards everything. They love foreigners...and their music is awesome. They do muscials for EVERYTHING! And i mean everything. They do the "classics" along with they're own creations and they even make musical versions of anime. There are lots of different sailor moon musicals for instance. I bought a Japanese musical off of eBay. It was funny as hell! All the parts were played by women. ALL of them. Great actors! And...DISCUSS!

They love foreigners? Since when?
They might like aspects of foreign culture, but last I heard a lot of people in Japan were pretty unbearable racists.
But I just have a friend living there; what do I know.

Posted: 7/29/04 at 3:45pmYeah, it's a good thing we live in a country free of racists!

It's little weird to read someone saying Japan is cool...
I'm Japanese and I'm living in Japan.
I'm glad you think so, Grotesque_Teriyaki!
I have never gone to see Takarazuka Revue Company before. I'm not
interested in it. I think some actress (should I say actors? LOL) can't
sing. I don't want to pay for that.
I used to go to see Shiki Theatrical Company ( http://www.shiki.gr.jp/index.html
You can read in English.) because they do a lot of Broadway musical. But
I don't like their acting and I just can't stand listen to songs translated to
Japanese. Most of them ruin original lyrics... so I don't see any shows
in Japan and always wait for next trip to NYC. I went last month so
really satisfied for now.
And may I say my opinions as a Japanese?
- Japanese loves foreigners if they are nice.
But unfortunately some of us kind to only white people and don't like Asian
because of our history. That's something I REALLY hate.
- Japanese loves the U.S. and some people want to become like American.
When I was a little, foreign country meant the U.S. and if we saw white
person, we believed he/she is American. (I'm telling you I'm still young.)
I know it's sound stupid. And most of young people are dying their hair
(it's changing recently though) and using colored contact lenses.
- Japanese loves to know about foreign countries and good at pretend them.
Many people try to know foreign countries, learn foreign languages
(especially English) and go to trip all over the world. I think it's too much
recent years about pretending. For example, when some intelligent
people talk on TV, they use a lot of English words which many people
can't understand. If they talk that way, people think they're educated.
I don't like it so I'm trying to speak all in Japanese.
- Talent comes AFTER beauty in Japan.
(I don't mean rude or anything, Grotesque_Teriyaki!)
Sadly I'm fat as a young Japanese girl and ugly so some strangers (men)
looked me like "Ugly..." and even one of my friend (girl) agreed it. I knew
she wasn't trying to mean so I didn't care much. Also my professor in
college called me nothing in front of other students because I'm not
pretty and don't have any talents. But during my stay in the U.S. for
10 months, anyone called me or looked at me like that. Even some
people told me I'm smart and beautiful. A woman said she wanna gain
her weight like my size.
All I said are just a tendency in Japan and my thoughts (I'm a bit far from
typical Japanese in some way.) so if you wanna know the facts, it's the
best way to come and see yourself.

Posted: 7/30/04 at 5:21pmThank you UBER much for your opinion! And i do agree that most musicals sort of um..."suck" when redone in other languages. But most translated songs suck anyway. The musical i have is mostly funny cause it's quality is that of a really rich high school production. Nice sets...semi-acting. ^___^ So I agree and thank you for your info. I don't know that much being a dumb gaijin! Heh!

Posted: 7/30/04 at 5:26pmThank you, N M, that was enlightening. I didn't realize Japan put so much emphasize on physical beauty. Not that the US is all-accepting, but these days if you called someone fat and ugly they'd be really hurt and people would be upset by it. Hmm. Updated On: 7/30/04 at 05:26 PM

I was going to send you a PM to change "pyshcial" to "physical".
But then I realized that you have all the correct letters, and the first and last letter correct.
So according to that Cambrige study, everyone should know exactly what you mean.

Posted: 7/31/04 at 2:31pmI'm Chinese and (to put it lightly) I didn't feel particularly welcome in Japan. Actually, I'm not particularly happy with the Japanese government either. To give you a clue about why, it has something to do with them burning their records and changing their history books to hide the atrocities and crimes against humanity they committed during WWII....

See what happens when people don't record these things in history books? But then again, Asian history always gets the shaft.
I don't want to turn this into a history lesson, but when Japan invaded China, they committed an "Asian Holocaust"; millions of civilians were murdered systematically or otherwise, and many were even used to test biochemical weapons and the like.
A good book to read is The Rape of Nanking (I think that's how you spell it), which documents how the citizens of the city of Nanking were completely slaughtered by the Japanese army. There are some pretty gruesome pictures, too.

Thank you for your response, Grotesque_Teriyaki and insomniak!
And also thank you for your really important opinion, BlueWizard.
Excuse me but about this part in your post...
I didn't feel particularly welcome in Japan. To give you a clue about why, it has something to do with them burning their records and changing their history books to hide the atrocities and crimes against humanity they committed during WWII....
I'm deeply sorry what you felt in Japan but If Japanese ware like that, I'm sure the reasons are:
1. Some Old-fashioned Japanese is STILL bragging that Japan WAS the top economic country in Asia so looks down on other Asians include Chinese.
I personally think Japan is going to retreating more than now and Chine will be the biggest country in Asia. Because I think Chinese people has a storing and (of course in the good way) passionate mental and so eager for things.
2. If you visited Japan in this year, I guess that's because crimes by Chinese happened quite often past several months.
If I was watching TV news, most of crimes (murders and thefts) by foreigner were by Chinese so it was like "Chinese again!?" I know it's not right to look at every Chinese people like that but as you know, sometimes that happens sadly...
By the way, we study about our tragedy between China or Korea and Japan at school and everyone know about the Nanking Massacre. But I still hope that China and Japan could build good relationship someday... I know since watching the news about a soccer game in Chong Qing, it will be really hard though...
Again, thank you for your positing, BlueWizard.

Again, thank you for your positing, BlueWizard.
My pleasure. I also hope that one day the two countries would develop better relations (a la Britain and France, who had for centuries been rivals but are now the friendliest of neighbours). I'm glad you learned about the Nanking massacre, I think it's very important that these events in history are never forgotten (and equally important that they are one day forgiven
).

Posted: 8/4/04 at 3:10pmI sort of feel dumb now...but the foreigner thing (about loving foreigners is mostly for American's i think)...this really turned into an interesting topic. I've learned a lot. ANd about Japan buring their records...that is terrible, but so have many countries, especially the one i live in...damn united states...this place is a big wasteland of controversy, covered up in more controversy. Than again...i'm probably wrong about more crap too...i'm just a lame-o fan person i guess... ^__^ I still like Japan though. And I'm sure china is cool too. Da Ja How! (i don't think i spelled that right...heh)
