You know, I've never been one to insist that every homophobic man is secretly gay, but I have to wonder after watching HUNTED: THE WAR AGAINST GAYS IN RUSSIA (directed by Ben Steele; narrated by Matt Bomer). (Yes, I know there has also been some academic research which has concluded that homophobes are statistically more apt to be closeted gays.)

The torturing of gay men shown in the film is like a parody of gay S&M films, from B&D to golden showers.

There's an old standup routine, I forget by who, that says "a thing can only be so straight before it's rendered gay." Things on that siding scale of homoeroticism include pro wrestling, frat culture and the Village People, who represent what happens when you cross the breaking point of hyper masculinity.

I don't know who said that, but ANIMAL HOUSE did a great job of dramatizing the homoeroticism of frat initiations.

In HUNTED, the attacks are carried out by gangs of boys (and a few girls). As they cluster around their victim, they make gay bashing look very much like a circle jerk (to mention yet another homo hetero activity.)

Right around the same time National Lampoon published an article devoted to the subject complete with VERY graphic photos of frat initiations and parties.  That article was quite influential to my childhood.

Now I'm sorry I missed the article, Matt.

 

Fraternities and sororities were banned at my high school, so we had "service clubs", which were basically the same thing except members didn't live together.

 

Initiations involved making new members run around naked in the Everglades and then stick articles of food up their butts. I thought it was the gayest thing I'd ever heard of and was terrified I might actually enjoy it and be outed. (Fortunately, I came down with appendicitis and was having surgery during the dreaded event. I was so relieved and grateful!)

Here's an interview with Jane Ward that expands on these topics- the traditions of "rituals" in straight college culture certainly comes from a weird place- "disgust/desire" anyone?

As Kinsey said, Everyone's Different. This is hardly news.

And - and this is also hardly a revelation - a great many men, of all sexual orientations, like a great many women, of all sexual orientations, find both the idea and the reality of both finding and having sex extremely exciting and enjoyable. 

Some of these men are exclusive in the gender of their prospective and actual partners.  Let's call them monosexual (aka some are 100% gay while others are 100% straight).

Some are very non-exclusive in the gender of their prospective and actual partners.  Let's call them bisexual.

Others are primarily exclusive in the gender of their prospective and actual partners.  But not entirely 100% exclusive.

We can call these people whatever we decide to call these people.

These categories are made somewhat more complicated because they can vary over the course of a lifetime, can be interrupted by periods, in some cases, of asexuality, and can be modified circumstantially by conditions of alienation from one gender or the other; and then, of course, their is the added fact that there are people who do not self-identify as either simply male or simply female (or whose self-identification may not accord with apparencies).

Then we can decide to either get hung up on the terminology.

Or not.

The "why" remains the same.

But I'll repeat it:
