Why is "It's always been that way" any sort of excuse?

Somewhat similar to the obnoxious Yankees fans YMCA thing I posted here last week, Sean Chapin's now posted a video of high school football fans in Ohio chanting "powder blue faggots" at their revivals without any sort of reprimand from anyone in the crowd.
Some of the kids from the school posted comments on the original video, saying that they weren't homophobic, that this chant was there long before they got there and that everyone should just STFU.
I'm so tired of hearing that excuse. Are Americans (by and large) really so devoid of critical thinking skills that we just mindlessly carry on traditions, which are in effect right just because they are established? And someone questioning those traditions is automatically attacking you personally?
Oh yeah, and happy belated Columbus Day, everyone!

This does explain Bush's second term...
