For a summer camp application, I have to right a paragraph answering the following questions:
Why is theatre important to the world?
Why is theatre important to you?
Could you please help me by proof-reading these two paragraphs? Thank you.
Theatre is important to the world for more reasons than one. The most apparent reason would be merely for entertainment. Theatre transfers an audience to another completely different world, which is what makes it so magical. In today’s societies, that is extremely crucial. Theatre relates one person to another. That includes individuals from a different culture, sex, race, sexual orientation, etc. Theatrical productions have and still are making advancements in human rights and other necessary changes in the world. A world without theatre would not be the equivalent of the world humans are familiar with today.
Similar to the world, theatre is important to myself for many reasons. I consider the most important reason to be how it transports me out of the stressful world I live in. I might not act onstage as much as I used to, but no matter what I am doing in a theatre, my mind concentrates strongly on it. Theatre has changed my life. Theatre is my life. As I child, I was miserable participating in athletics. The day I discovered theatre, I knew that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It makes me happy and puts joy in my heart. I help create part of the magic the audience views. Whether it makes them smile, cry, laugh, or be completely silent, I know I assisted putting those emotions into them. Sure the Tony award is a nice career accomplishment, but the day my work changes someone’s life like the first production I saw changed mine, I will have reached my goal.

The only thing I would look at is in your first paragraph:
"In today’s societies, that is extremely crucial."
I'm not sure you want the plural form of society.

Okay, one paragraph at a time - I put asterisks around the words I've changed. Also why do you spell theater, theatre? -
Theatre is important to the world for more reasons than one. The most apparent reason would be merely for entertainment. Theatre transfers an audience to *a* completely different world, which is what makes it so magical. In today’s *society*, that is extremely crucial. Theatre relates one person to another,*including* individuals from *different cultures*, sex, race, sexual orientation, etc. Theatrical productions have *made* and still are making advancements in human rights and other necessary changes in the world. A world without theatre would not be the *world* humans are familiar with today.

Feodor- Most of the world spells it THEATRE, just like COLOUR etc.
Here in America, most professionals also spell it with an -RE.

Here they are after I made some changes:

Theatre relates one person to another, including individuals from different cultures, sex, race, sexual orientation, etc. Theatrical productions have made and still are making advancements in human rights and other necessary changes in the world. I help create part of the magic the audience views. Whether it makes them smile, cry, laugh, or be completely silent, I know I assisted in evoking these emotions in them. While the Tony award is a nice career accomplishment, the day my work changes someone’s life like the first production I saw changed mine, I will have reached my goal.

Next paragraph:
Similar to the world, theatre is important to *me* for many reasons. I consider the most important reason to be how it transports me out of the stressful world *in which* I live. I might not act onstage as much as I used to, but no matter what I am doing in a theatre, my mind concentrates strongly on it. Theatre has changed my life. Theatre is my life. As I child, I was miserable participating in athletics. The day I discovered theatre, I knew *it was* what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It makes me happy and puts joy in my heart. I help create part of the magic the audience views. Whether it makes them smile, cry, laugh, or *silences them,* completely, I know I *played a part in helping them feel* those emotions.* Sure the Tony Award is a nice career accomplishment, but the day my work, *in a show,* changes someone’s life like the first *show* I saw changed mine, I will have reached my goal.

Posted: 3/24/05 at 10:13pmOkay, whatever. I made a living in the theater, from age 9 to age 31, and never spelled it "re". Personally, I find it a bit pretentious.

The last sentence above ends with the word *in*. In is a preposition. It is improper sentence structure to end a sentence with any of the prepositions (i.e., after, at, by, down, for, from, in, on, of, over, past, round, since, through, til, to, under, up, with). I recommended a change in an earlier post.

ha, not really a matter of the teacher. Even a bad teacher should be telling you that. It's pretty standard.

I never had a teacher tell me that. Luckily, my entire family is obsessed with grammar and such (well, it's only lucky sometimes; sometimes it's really annoying.)
Actually, I was editing the newspaper for my high school one day and I said "you're not supposed to end a sentence in a preposition, right?" and my teacher responded with "if you're stuck up." (She was joking, not being mean, but that's the state of education in America.)
I learned more English in my French classes than in my English classes.

any country that learned "British" english spells it theatre, as they spell colour
it is not pretentious at all, just how it's done elsewhere......
(the one exception may be Canada, as I don't remember)
remember we're the ONLY place on the planet not using the metric system.....now THAT'S pretentious
