Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

I couldn't believe the trash I saw last night. CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is anything BUT a good film.

Danny Elfman's score was horrendous. I shuddered every time the Oompa Loompas had a songbreak. Just AWFUL. I couldn't believe it.

Ever since I saw the first trailer and the first images, I knew this wasn't going to live up to the original film. But I went to the theatre with an open mind. I read that most media mags & sites gave it positive reviews. Plus it had Johnny Depp. Plus it was directed by Tim Burton. Plus it had Freddie Highmore.

WRONG-O!

H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!

Everything from the cheesy music to the atrocious costume designs of the Oomps Loompas to the horrid CGI look to the stupid jokes.

The only positive thing about the film was the performances of Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore. However, the material the script had was HORRIBLE. Depp's interpretation of the character followed the cheesy script. And fine, OK, Wonka had a father. But the hug at the end? "Daddy!" CRAP!

The original film was a thousand times better. I don't care if the newer film is more closely followed to the books.

I remember the anticipation of seeing Wonka for the first time, and Gene Wilder's magnificent somersault to say "TA DA!" And the anticipation with a GENIOUS score going into the all-candy room of the factory. The original film is SO much better than the new film. Slugworth scared the hell out of me!

Tim Burton wanted to make a "darker" Wonka film? HE FAILED. And I never thought I would say that. I love Burton's work. I love Depp's work. I can't believe they MADE this crap? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

Burton wants to do GYPSY ROSE LEE next? He'd better get his act together. And NEVER hire Danny Elfman again!

You have impeccable timing. I'm going to see this movie in one hour(in IMAX.) I'm gonna kick your virtual ass if it's good and you worried me for nothing. re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

midtown - it's SLIGHTLY enjoyable. See it for its historical significance: Johnny Depp's first bad film.

*shrug* I liked it.
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

I completely disagree- I loved Elfman's score and thought the movie was good, but wasn't particularly impressed with Depp or Highmore. Full review in my blog. :P

I say it was worth the price of admission just for the squirrels!

I enjoyed it, but I felt that it lacked that certain cinema magic, that the original has. Perhaps it was too reliant upon special effects.

I completely agree with the capn...my take on the new movie...it would be great if you are high or seriously drunk.

Go see wedding crashers and save your money $$$

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

Yesterday I did a movie theatre binge. In order, I saw WEDDING CRASHERS, THE LONGEST YARD, and CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

In order, LONGEST YARD was surprisingly good, WEDDING CRASHERS was expectedly OK, and CHARLIE was disappointingly awful.

I saw Wedding Crashers that same night, too. I wasn't expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised. Though I'm getting sick of the old "childish men get fixed by virtuous women" cliche. Way to set up unrealistic expectations for relationships in real life.

Wedding crashers was hilarious but had a cheesy cliche' ending....but the first hour and 40 mins I was falling out of my seat...

I find Owen Wilson unspeakably disgusting, not to mention unfunny and untalented.

I liked Owen in the first one or two films, but he only does one thing and nothing else. It's so old now. I'm not sure why people still flock to see him do the same thing in EVERY movie.

It's like Moulin Rouge. It's a lot of postmodern musical fun, but not if you go in expecting something that works by old-fashioned rules.

I had a great time.

You're comparing trashy CHARLIE to brilliant MOULIN ROUGE? HAH!

I for one really liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory AND I'm a fan of Willy Wonka.

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

Although I couldn't necessarily say it was a good film by any means, I was laughing my ass off all through Charlie

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

'Charlie' was solid, although I didn't necessarily enjoy Depp. But I enjoyed the kids and the visuals and the story's always a fun story.

I don't think the original movie's especially compelling. Passable when I was nine but not something I really got into.

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

Mister Matt that's why you should see wedding crashers...vince vaughn steals the entire movie...owen is just regular but vince makes the movie worthwhile...there is something about his delivery its always right on time for good laughs

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

Vaughn's definitely the funny part of 'Wedding Crashers.' Wilson's playing the nice guy.

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

"I didn't necessarily enjoy Depp"

I enjoyed him the most when he wasn't doing things/saying things for cheap laughs. If there's one thing I hate it's cheap laughs. I thought he was best when he would do something with his face. Je's actions definitely spoke louder than words.

re: Why, Johnny, whyyyyyyyy????

It's not fully Depp's fault the material was full of cheap laughs. I'd assume Depp would have read the script before FULLY committing to the film - I do know he discussed the project with Burton and said yes right away.

Still, just an awful adaptation. If it was without the cheap jokes and god awful songs, it would have improved SOOOO much.

I never have a problem when people express their opinions, as we all do, in liking or disliking...But Cap'n...no disrespect or anything - Do you ever post a thread about anything you like?
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
