re: Wicked on repeat

I was never in the broom closet. I've always said that there were songs I liked and songs I didn't. I still think the level of unprofesionalism displayed onstage by the two leads was horrendous and should never have been allowed to happen, I still think the characters are terribly underdeveloped and that they didn't adapt the book nearly as well as they could have.

Well, I missed that somehow. I always read your posts as unadulterated loathing (sorry) for the show.

You can like something even if you know it's not perfect.

My posts show exactly how I feel about whatever aspect of the show I'm writing about.

But above all else, I hate the Menzelists and Chenoites.

*shrug* Then I read wrong. Sorry.

re: Wicked on repeat

Speaking of the Menzelists and Chenoites, after Broadway on Broadway I was talking to my friend and I told her that I was interested in seeing Jennifer Laura Thompson as Glinda because I enjoyed her in Urinetown. My friend said to me "You don't want to do that, she's horrible." I asked what her reasoning was and she told me, "She's just not Kristin."

OMG! I LOVE watching shills get into fights with people who have been here for ages. They don't know who the really popular people are, and it CRACKS ME UP!

I can't stand people like that... replacements are good in their own unique ways. Seeing different people perform the same role is one of the great things about theatre.

re: Wicked on repeat

I'll be the first one to say that when I saw Wicked on Opening Night, I absolutely loved it except for three things:
-I thought the first act felt horribly long
-I hated the song "Something Bad"
-I picked up on some of the spots of poorly written lyrics.
I thought the show was, in and of itself, enjoyable on a whole. I had no problems with it at all. I still don't hate the show. I've seen it three more times since then, and while my only reason for going back would be to see JLT at this point, I'm not against the show. I'm against those who worship it at the Holy Grail of musicals without considering anything else is out there. Like Wicked, by all means, but don't let it be the only show you like.

...and for the sake of the world, don't become annoying Menzel/Cheno heads because I just can't take that.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Wicked on repeat

I actually am a Wicked fan...

and I love a lot of the songs but I would pick Defying Gravity or As Long As Your Mine.

Of course, you could just listen to Popular once and have it on repeat in your head ALL DAY LONG. I enjoy how you can have a friend listen to it once, not even all the way through and you will still see them singing/humming it 5 mins later.

re: Wicked on repeat

Can I reveal something? Wicked was what first got me interested in musical theater. I was absolutely obsessed with it up until I saw it in March. It was a great show, but I felt something lacking. I'm still not sure what it was, but I realized I didn't love it as much. I still like it, and I do listen to a few select songs, but I have matured (rapidly, I might add) in my interests. I now have 50 cast recordings and a handful of DVD's collected in about 6 months. Who knew that a Sondheim die-hard could start out as a Shiznit? re: Wicked on repeat

re: Wicked on repeat

What got me interested in musical theatre?

Sadly....it was Cats

EDIT: No, I think I'll say it proudly.

Cats was the show that got me interested in musical theatre! So there!

CATS will be so proud. re: Wicked on repeat

So, the two Sondheimers have just revealed their humble theater beginnings. How do you think Nugget got into it?

re: Wicked on repeat

Priest, you're not alone. CATS was my first real theatre experience. I was obsessed with that show for a good year or three.

re: Wicked on repeat

There's nothing wrong with it being Wicked, Gov, like I said I'm all for it being ANY show so long as it's something that opens you up to everything else.

Mine was The Pirates of Penzance, although it was in movie form. My parents took me to a regional version of it when I was about 6 but I already knew the whole thing by heart due to the film. Although Broadway wise my first show was Beauty and the Beast and I'll proudly say I loved it and "If I Can't Love Her" is one of my favorite songs to this day.

re: Wicked on repeat

Something to add: Although Wicked got the ball rolling, it was not the first show I loved. That honor goes to RENT, which I listened to when I was 7. We were sexy, sexy kids. (Thank you, Rachael Harris.) re: Wicked on repeat

WOW. Are you serious?! It's taken me about six years to collect that many cast recordings. (I have this huge list of ones that I want, too, but I'm really poor.)

My first show ever was Les Mis. When I was six I saw the Tenth Anniversary Concert on KCET and fell in love with it. Then when I finally saw it on Broadway four years later, I was extremely surprised to find that the people onstage were actually doing things other than standing at mikes singing! I remember flipping through my program before the show and looking at the pictures thinking, "OMG, Fantine's in a bed!"
