Hey everyone. We recently switched to hard wire internet in our nyc apt. through Time Warner and need a wirelss router.
Any input would be very helpful. The installer suggested the Apple Airport, but that any would do. Apple doesnt even rank on CNET, so am also looking for info from y'all.
Thanks in advance!

And this would be more of a problem in an apartment building. You will get booted constantly. Give it a random name that someone in your building might not automatically associate with you and a password. You don't need to be a techie to do this. For $30 someone at Linksys did it for me.

Cisco bought Linksys. I currently have a Belkin but have used Linksys in the past. Both are very easy to set up and then to personalize and secure. Most cost between $30-$50 for decent ones. You cant get them at any local bestbuy/office depot/target etc. But i usually get them online at buy.com or something.
i would also check with TWC. I know Cablesvision in NJ has a modem that is also the wireless router, so all you need is one piece of equipment, but I think you have to specifically request it. It's worth a shot.

Interesting you mention going to TWC. I had initially wanted them to set up the wireless, but with the triple play package it's not a wireless hookup apparently, or it was not on my order and to upgrade would mess up the pricing I got in the first place...typical of my luck with utility company service calls...they never go smoothly.
Anyway, he suggested I stay with my plan and add the wireless router. I'm sure I can install any of them, so not worried about that. I just found it odd that the Valet was CNET's top two even though the main thing it had going for it is it's ease of use.

Posted: 6/1/11 at 6:47pmI love creative network names. Mine used to be called Camel Toe when I was in grad school. Unfortunately my roommate now already had one set up when I moved in and won't let me change the name.

LOL I love "FBI Surveillance Van #83," because if I really was an FBI surveillance van, that's exactly what I would call myself.
As far as routers, I used to have a Linksys. It didn't have enough range, so I got a Apple Airport Extreme. Works for both my Macs and PCs, and I can go all over the house. The range is great, and it couldn't have been easier to set up.

Thanks all!
I went with a Netgear 600 something or other. Works great, though I did have to call India to finish setup. My biggest complaint right now is the big blue light on top that is way too bright in our bedroom! LOL.
Thanks again!
And just in case someone wanted to steal my signal, I did not end up using Poopoo Undies as my network name.

Gaft or electrical tape should fix that
