In the original series of Oz books written by L. Frank Baum the red brick road goes to the Quadling Country in Oz. Red is the Quadlings' state color.
In his books, the Land of Oz was divided into four quadrants and each was designated a particular color: Winkie Country = Yellow, Gillikin Country = Purple, Munchkin Country = Blue, and Quadling Country = Red. Glinda the Good was the ruler of the Quadlings in L. Frank Baum's Oz series. As her bubble floats away from Munchkinland in the 1939 film, it appears to be following the red brick road. Therefore, the red brick road most likely leads back to her homeland, Quadling Country.

Posted: 9/23/13 at 12:56pmThe red brick road is purely a design decision for the movie and has no bearing or mention in Baum's book. By the red/Quadling logic the Yellow Brick Road should be either Blue (for the Munchkins) or Green, since it leads to the Emerald City. And since Glinda has become the Witch of the North in the movie the road should be purple if she's following it back to her home.

I've been on the fence about seeing this, but after reading Besty's review, I'm seeing it tonight!
Out of curiosity, how much are you guys paying? Tickets in San Francisco are $18.

Preach, AEA!
You are right.
Cedric Gibbons and his gang decided that for the movie's first Technicolor set of Munchkinland they would move away from "blue" as the main favored color of the region. The set is largely in muted colors with a lot of grays on the flooring and in the Munchkin housing. Then they have the three balancing primary color elements for Red, Blue, and Yellow --- the Yellow Brick Road, the Red Brick Road (purely an MGM invention) and the deep blue water in the pond and stream. The rest of the vibrant colors are found on the Munchkin costumes.
So it was all done for design purposes. Many people have speculated what the Red Brick Road is for, and since red is the favored color for Quadlings, that's the general theory, even if there is no evidence of any kind to back it up.
Incidentally, Baum never referred to this region as "Munchkinland" in the books. It was always called the Munchkin Country.
He also never called it the Yellow Brick Road ... it was the road of yellow bricks.
EDIT: Oh! And thirdly, Dorothy doesn't have a last name in the first book (Wizard of Oz). He gave her the last name of Gale for his 1903 Broadway production, then continued to use "Gale" in the other books she appears in (beginning with Ozma of Oz).

Jungle Red, I'm horrified by those prices. Someone else said they're paying $20 in NYC.
Here in Kansasland, it's $10.50 for a matinee for the 3D IMAX. I actually got a free pass, so I paid nothing.
But I have to say that after seeing it in a theatre on that huge screen in 3D, it is absolutely worth $20. You won't regret it.

I know I won't regret it.
$10.50 in San Francisco will get you a small coke and a small popcorn. And Matinee? What's that?

It's when old people, bums, actors, artists, and kids go to movies.
The rest of the folks go out at night, like vampires.

Posted: 9/23/13 at 1:39pmBesty, what are your thoughts on the proposed "Red Brick Road" television series (see my link in previous post)? That was the first I had heard of it.... Wonder if it could ever be successful. A dark twist on Oz ala Game of Thrones.

I'm all up for dark twists and OZ and whatnot, but I really can't wait until this Game of Throne thing goes away.
I know it won't and I don't mean to threadjack. I'm trying to get through the first book and oh my god I can't. It's taken me almost three months and I'm not even halfway through.
Anyway, the movie theaters here do offer matinees, but not on IMAX or Cinemark XD shows. Also, SAG membership doesn't get you into those either. The biggest theater downtown only offers student prices on Thursdays. My old theater offers an Early Bird Showing at $6.50 for every first screening of the day.

Hey, I wrote a couple of books based on the premise of "what happened to those shoes" after Dorothy returned to Kansas, so I don't have any problem with other people exploring this world. Public domain makes all things possible.
I just want it to be good, that's all.

I have no qualms about exploring OZ. I just don't see why everything has to join the Game of Throne bandwagon.
So what did happen with the shoes?

I paid 17.50 for a 7PM showing in New Brunswick, NJ on Friday. My friend paid $14 in Atlantic City yesterday. Was well worth that price tag!!
Really wish I could've gotten back a second time.
