My uncle bought me a Barbie once. I must've been about 5. And I was NOT the kind of girl who played with Barbies... I don't even remember there being an occasion. I think he just bought it for me because I didn't see him all that often in those days, and he's my godfather.
I hope I didn't appear too ungrateful. In retrospect, I think he was a college student at the time, and probably spent some of the very little money he had on it. It was actually very sweet of him.

A used concrete elephant planter. It still had dirt in it.
I mean, what?!

I have a friend that every year, we agree not to exchange for financial reasons, and every year around Dec 21, she announces that she got me something. The same holds true for a mutual friend. So this third friend (a guy) and I scramble last minute to get her something. So one year, after the usual routine, we exchange gifts. The guy friend got an I Love Lucy tape (this was quite a few years ago), which he liked...he's a Lucy fan. Then he pulled me aside to show me the box. On the back it said "Your free gift with your subscripion to TV Guide".

Posted: 12/22/08 at 7:03pmThis thread just reminded me of 4th grade. Instead of doing a grab bag, like years before, we did the Secret Santa thing. Some boy in my class, who did not like me at all, got my name. He had no intention of getting me anything, and that was discovered the day of our class party. So, the teacher called his home, informing them of this, and I guess someone got something and brought it to the school during the day.

Posted: 12/25/08 at 6:48pmMarianne-- My age-old nemesis, who has had an ongoing feud with me since the age of six and who has made it her business to humiliate me publicly as much as possible, drew my name for my chorus' Secret Santa exchange. Well, I was surprised. She got me a LOVELY present-- some delicious chocolates and my favourite kind of perfume. I was so surprised at her maturity. (Of course, later that day, I heard her complaining to her friends about how she got the WORST person for her Secret Santa, but I didn't care because I was eating chocolates.)

I wish my life was so bad that my 'worst' gift was a Wii...
“We just had a bad Christmas,” Randi Young, 24, of 1247 South St., told District Court Judge Sawako Gardner, while asking the judge to lift a no-contact order imposed at the time of her arrest.
Young is charged with a class A misdemeanor count of simple assault alleging she hit her boyfriend, Heath Blom, 26, of the same address. Police allege the Christmas fisticuffs began after Blom complained about getting a Wii from Young for Christmas instead of the remote control airplane he asked for.

My mother-in-law sends us boxes of gifts every Xmas. (See post above regarding half-eaten bag of cough drops.) They're filled with lots "stuff," so much, in fact, that I let a lot of it stay in the boxes and pull out a thing here and a thing there for the kids over time. (They're "little things," tchotchkes.)
Well, I was looking in the sole box that is left over from this past Xmas and found that she had sent two "travel toothbrushes." One in pink and one in blue, no doubt to match the gender of each child. Since we are getting ready to go on a vacation, I thought I'd take the toothbrushes out and give them to the kids to pack. I figured the kids would think they were cool (they're the type where the brush comes apart in the middle and fits in the bottom half, like a case.)
As I handed them to my children, I noticed that they had both been USED!
I'm sorry, but I think a USED TOOTHBRUSH is a horrible gift! I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but come on! I mean, write a note telling someone you love them. It costs nothing but a piece of paper, some ink and your time. But don't send someone a USED TOOTHBRUSH. That's just gross!

This thread has made me chuckle. It reminds me of my dearly departed partner's philosophy of gift giving. Every year he would find he most tackiest ugliest gift and buy 8 of them to give to each member of his family at Christmas. His reasoning? He said 15 years from now no one will remember the wonderful sweater or book they were given but they surely will remember the life sized Elvis bust lamp or plastic water fountain with plastic flowers and Christmas lights or the electronic Jesus on the cross clock that would play a electric versions of the Hallelujah chorus on the hour as LEDs in his crown of thorns lit up ( I kid you not a 14th street special).
Sure enough, 16 years after his passing these gifts are remembered with tears of laughter at each family holiday get together. A marvelous gift indeed!

I'm still fretting over the fact that Kate 2 got a rock for Christmas from her grandmother. How could a grandparent do that? Grandparents are supposed to spoil their grandchildren?
Yeah, you would think. Not so much in my family. Ever see Beauty Queen of Leenane? My grandmother was like that, but worse.
I remember for Christmas one year getting an unused complimentary overnight kit from a trans-Atlantic flight on Continental airlines. Plastic comb, razor, toothbrush, etc.

Posted: 1/28/09 at 4:35pmI got a tube of used lipstick and a $1 scratch off lottery ticket from a family friend when I was 10. I didn't even win any money on the ticket. That was the best gift she ever gave me. A close second was an American Girl catalog with dolls and accessories circled with a note that said that these would be great things to ask my parents to buy me. She was always an interesting one to get a gift from.
