I thought RED STATE was awful, as well. A "message" movie with absolutely no message.
Did anyone see BUCKY LARSON?

Jordan-
I avoided Red State because I heard it was awful, but really did want to see it because of Melissa Leo. Do you think it's worth watching just for her?

Posted: 12/29/11 at 11:29amJust watch the first half of the movie. It is where most of Leo's screentime is (I thought she was really good) and Michael Parks kills it with a sermon. The second-half just gets clunky, exploitation-lite madness with no real ending.

Posted: 12/29/11 at 11:34amMelissa Leo is fast becoming one of those actresses who will do anything for a paycheck, so needing to see something just because she's in it will, in a few years, result in watching Frosted Flakes and Tampax commercials on YouTube because she'll no doubt be doing them as well.

Ha well I'm an all or nothing kind of guy so if I make it through the opening credits I'll stick with it till the end.
Similarly I can't show up late to a movie. The other day at Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close someone joined a person sitting next to me about 15 minutes into the movie and asked her, "What did I miss?"
Edit- Jordan, Ha! Well that's funny, but really has Leo been making that many movies lately? You would think with her Oscar win she could be more choosey about the roles she accepts.
I can be very dedicated to an actor though. I saw all 6 of Jessica Chastain's movies in the theater (even the awful Texas Killing Fields) because I fell in love with her this year. I would appreciate if she gave me a bit of a break in 2012 and only made two or three movies!

Posted: 12/29/11 at 11:40amDid they respond with "Well, the gays are all over New York so God sent the planes to hit the towers and kill that poor Tom Hanks leaving his little son (or daughter, I can't tell by the high pitched squealing voice and baby-dyke haircut) and homely Sandra Bullock all alone"

LOL no the woman wisely responded just watch and you'll catch on. And for the record I loved Extremely Loud, although I'm sure many might say it is manipulative garbage. If that's the case then count me as manipulated.
I was such a sobbing wreck, as were many around me, that a woman passed me a kleenex! I completely lost it for about 15 and walked home in the rain on Tuesday a mess. Sandra Bullock was fantastic.

And to be fair, I haven't seen it yet. I do want to but from everything I've seen that little boy is going to get on my nerves within the first 3 minutes and I'm going to start hoping Viola Davis curbs him.
But somehow I doubt that'll happen.

No, Viola has a small role and does not clock Thomas Horn in face. :)
I thought he was terrific and not annoying at all. He says he was tested for Asperger's and the results were inconclusive, so I think there's supposed to be a trace of that in his performance, which makes any "annoying" qualities understandable.

Posted: 12/29/11 at 12:07pmIt is the best show of all time that hath ever been created.

Posted: 12/29/11 at 12:20pmIt always just looked like a cheesy sitcom to me. Is it as good as Arrested Development, or at least in that same vein?

Posted: 12/29/11 at 12:23pmIt makes Arrested Development look like Whitney.

Posted: 12/29/11 at 2:56pmIf I had to make a show comparison to Community it would be the Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright series Spaced in terms of embracing its inner-nerd, but way more polished. What's great about it is that it has plenty of Easter eggs and continuity for the fans who have watched from Day 1 but also has way more stand-alone, experimental episodes, even more than the other sitcoms on the network, for people just starting. I think this idea that it is not flexible for new viewers is ridiculous. I know people who just watch the paintball episodes and immediately got into the show.
