I once took a red hot poker to a particularly ornery set designer...oh, wait a minute....

I've had pretty good experiences both working as a techie and as an actress, but I do have a couple of good stories. Once when I was working as a dresser, I got a black eye from one of the actors I was dressing during a quick change. She was a complete spaz, completely insecure, and had no concept of the people around her (which is why she was equally scarry to be on stage with)! This is the same girl who, in a different show that I was in with her, was running full steam ahead off-stage, ended up running straight into one of the blacks and hit a table that was set behind it. As she's sitting on the floor rubbing her leg, and my then-roomate (who's a tech. guy) was staring at her wondering if she was OK, she looks up and says, "Wasn't that the best I've ever done that?!"

I also worked in the costume shop in college, and during one of my first shows there, a girl came in who'd been a big diva in rehearsals. After her fitting the designer said, "If she keeps this up, I'm going to take in her costumes so she thinks she gained weight!" And he did! I've seen countless costume designers dress people they don't like in un-flattering costumes, and people they love are made to look great. So, never anger a designer.

During the time that I was running crew for Crazy for You, I got pushed and shoved so many times that I lost count and I'm sure the same goes for everybody else in the crew. We were also ignored most of the time...sometimes I wonder if some actors even realize how much would be lost if it wasn't for the techies.

I once heard someone say "Techies are just people too stupid to act."

Wow. Am I the only one who laughed when they read that?

So we had this crazy eighteen year old at the lights.. and she was so loud the people in the back row could hear her.. and she was kicked out of her driver's ed class apparently. And she was a meanie to everyone. So I "accidently" stepped on her foot really hard when I was running. This is one techie that got what she deserved.

We had the Marians double cast in my highschool production of Music Man. Marian 1 was extremely talented, nice to the rest of the cast, and worked on the set as well. Marian 2 was the director's favorite. She could sing relatively well, but couldn't act at all- her Marian was borrrrring. The costume designer had 2 sets of each costume for the Marians. The designer altered Marian 2's dresses to be ill-fitting and uglllly. Hooray for costume designers!

"`I grow old... I grow old... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.` What does that mean, Mr. Marlowe?" "Not a bloody thing. It just sounds good." He smiled. "That is from the `Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.` Here's another one. `In the room women come and go/Talking of Michael Angelo.' Does that suggest anything to you, sir?" "Yeah -- it suggests to me that the guy didn't know very much about women." "My sentiments exactly, sir. Nonetheless I admire T. S. Eliot very much." Hmmm...sortof off topic, but last year in The Sound of Music, I played Maria, and I heard that a girl who had gotten a nun was saying that I only got the part of Maria because I kissed the director's ass. One day, some friends and I weren't needed for an hour at dance rehearsal, so we walked to the local 7-11 and Jack-in the Box. This girl will drink anybody's left over Jamba Juice/Starbucks,etc., so we all got Slushees, and my friend decided to give the rest of hers to this one girl...with sweet and sour sauce, hair, spit and ketchup in it.re: Worst Thing You've Ever Seen An Actor Do To a Techie?.The funniest part was watching this girl drink it. So this is a story of one actor getting another actor back.

And then, do you know Monseiur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.

Dear Piqued,

Why am I so hard to fit?

Big Shoulders...big booty (too much stairmaster!)....and very long arms.

Whoever tells you those dress shirts with 35/36 sleeve length will fit someboy with a 36 sleeve length is a lair! LIAR!

Regarding my period hats...when I was younger I was a garage sale addict and I loved wearing vintage clothing...especially from the 1940's.

The riding boots?.....cannot comment in mixed company!!!

One of the gayest intros ever.

I adore you Windy, but I'm sorry, I just couldn't let that go.

I've heard of that happening before. Sounds great to me.

I don't have any interesting stories, but they are fun to read!

So, having mentioned getting my black eye from an actor when I was a techie, I also need to mention a bad techie moment when I was acting in a show in college. It was during a particularly horrendous tech for the "Scottish Play". I'm talking 11 to 6, back at 7, and we're now at about 3:00 am and nowhere near being done. So we're sitting in the greenroom. So, as usually, the techies were talking on headset during a time when the lighting designer was trying to make some changes. Well, the ME apparantly pressed the intercom button on his headset, because all of a sudden we hear him say, "Techies take five, but don't tell the actors." Having been a techie, I understand that during techs the actors often have more down time, so I understand why the breaks are needed more often for the tech crew, however, "Don't tell the actors"?! Needless to say there was a mass-exodus onto the stage where the ME got quite a talking, too (and not just by the actors, but by the design faculty on hand, as well).

I worked with a bitch of an actor on the last show I teched. She was extremely difficult to work with, and insisted that she never had time to put her mop away before making her next entrance, so I was assigned to take it from her. She never said thank you, never acknowledged me for it, never smiled, so while I was grabbing the wet mop from her I "accidentally" smacked her in the face. For the rest of the performances, rather than saying "thank you", acknowledging me, or smiling, she ducked.
